New Year's Eve at the World Juniors usually features a USA vs. Canada clash, but this year those two met in the tournament's opener. While slightly less exciting, the Americans will finish the group stage with an important game against Denmark as they look to keep the good times rolling after dismantling Switzerland yesterday.
While the US has clinched a spot in the quarterfinals, there is some seeding up for grabs today. A straight up regulation loss combined with a Canada win over Sweden would punt the Americans down to 4th place. That would likely set up a third straight quarterfinal against Russia, who leads group B at the moment.
A win (regulation, OT or shootout) would clinch the Americans' grasp on second place and keep Canada in third regardless of what happens in the Canada-Sweden game. That would be enjoyable for pride purposes though likely won't matter much in terms of who the teams play in the quarters; It looks like Finland and the Czech Republic are the two likely opponents in some order for the US and Canada in Saturday's quarterfinal round.
