The Boston College field hockey team split their weekend with a Friday loss to Louisville and a Sunday win against UMASS. The team lost on Friday 3-2 after taking a 2-0 lead early in the first half. The goals were scored by freshmen Elizabeth Dennehy and Frederique Haverhals. Louisville's attack came quickly after the BC goals, as the Cardinals scored their first goal in the 25th minute before tying the game just two minutes later. The game winning goal came in the 29th minute to cap off a high scoring first half. Despite chances for both teams, neither team was able to convert in the second half and the game ended with a 2-3 loss for the Eagles.
On Sunday the Eagles hit the road to Amherst to face UMASS in a crucial non-conference test. The Eagles quickly went down when the Minutewomen scored a goal in the first minute. The UMASS lead did not last long, as just five minutes later freshman Ymke Rose Gote set up junior Eryn McCoy for a goal to tie the game at one. Shortly after the goal, snow began to fall and would continue for most of the game. The snowfall would not be a deterrent for the Eagles however, as BC earned eight corners throughout the first half. On the last corner of the half, McCoy was able to push the ball past the keeper to break the deadlock. The second half started with McCoy scoring her third goal and a hat trick just six minutes into the half. The goal gave the Eagles a 3-1 commanding lead. In the 53rd minute, UMASS scored a goal to come within one and put pressure on the Eagles. Despite their late attacks, UMASS was not able to send the game into overtime and Boston College won 3-2.
Next up for the Eagles is a critical road game at Virginia on Saturday, October 24th.
