2013-2014 BCI Awards: Best "Other" Game of the Year - BC Women's Hockey's Dramatic Senior Day Win vs. BU

BC's last second dramatic victory on Senior Day gets the nod

BC Athletics

We have come to the end of the BCI Awards. With August just two days away, we now await the promise of a new year of exciting moments.

The final award, for best "other" game of the year outside of the big three sports, goes to BC women's hockey's last second win against BU on February 22.

While BC had already locked up the Hockey East regular season title heading into the final home-and-home with Boston University, the last weekend was important for seeding purposes as BC was, at the time, continuing to push for home ice in the first round of the NCAA tournament (womp womp). Also, it was BU, and eff them.

The game played out in a fairly aggravating manner - BC poured shot after shot and generated chance after chance, but as these things tend to happen in hockey, BU scored two goals against the run of play forcing a pair of comebacks to tie the game. In the third period, BC outshot BU 23-7. With 49 shots on goal but only two past the BU goalie, the game looked headed for OT. Then, on their fiftieth shot, BC freshman Andie Anastos managed to score with 5 seconds left to give BC the well-deserved W.

Grant's GIF recap from the game also reminds us that the game featured an Academy Award level performance by BU's goaltender with multiple flops to draw calls, one of which negated a possible BC goal. That only added to the aggravation over the course of the game, so it was great when the Eagles managed to pull it out in the end.

Sadly, BU would have the last laugh, beating BC for the Hockey East championship two weeks later.

The Final Vote

Comments from the Panel

"The only "other" sport I attended a game/watched was the women's hockey senior day vs. BU, when they scored at the last second to win. I'd say it'd be hard to top that. So I'm going to go with that." - Anonymous voter

"#9 BC field hockey upsets #2 UConn, 2-1, in overtime. Because eff UConn." -Brian Favat
