We hit the midway point of the 2014 season this week and with it a look into the complete 128 team rankings of the Book. Our top four teams now are identical to the composite Massey rankings, with Ole Miss, Mississippi St, Auburn and Baylor leading the way. Oh and by the way, wasn't The Book the first on the scene with the Rebels? Now of course, it could all go to hell in a hand basket any week now, but when everyone else said we were nuts...well, we are nuts..but at least Ole Miss is making look less than totally insane.
As ESPN's Brad Edwards mentioned today, "how amazing is it that people put Mississippi State at the top of their ballot above the defending and undefeated national champion?" Heady times indeed.
The other team that has been in our top 10 for a while now of course is Marshall. The Herd has now crept into the national top 25 and is 21 in the Massey ratings...nuts part II!!
We do have some seemingly underrated teams, although these teams are ones we usually think of as overrated, that would be Florida State and Notre Dame. They will meet this week in the latest Notre Dame, Game of the Century, in Tallahassee. The winner stays firmly planted in the national championship race. The loser, while not eliminated, will have to wait for the cycle of upsets to come around to move them back into play.
The Book takes Notre Dame (as much as that pains me) to cover the 12 point spread, picking the Noles by 9.
Our Eagles certainly benefited from their win at NC State, jumping up to #48 in the country, remaining ninth in the ACC. BC will be a five point dog this week vs Clemson at Alumni. The Book was on the right side of the spread once again with BC and is now 4-1 ATS on Eagle games.
BC's final six games then have them facing teams ranked 17 (Clemson), 9 (Florida State), 25 (Louisville), 35 (Virginia Tech), 74 (Syracuse) and 98 (#TheRivalry). BC has played UMass (#116), Pittsburgh (#66), USC (#19), Colorado State (#42) and NC State (#81), so certainly the second half of the schedule is significantly stronger than the first half.
The Book had its best week of the season last week, posting a 30-20 record good for a solid 60% winning mark. This nudges us above .500 for the year now at 153-149-5 .507. How close is the Book now to what Vegas is posting? Well this week, using the opening lines posted on Yahoo (the standard), The Book has 7 games which exactly match those lines and another 10 which are within a point one way or the other.
We are off and running this week too, being on the right side of the Tuesday night game, taking Louisiana to drop Texas State (ULL -1 as a 3 point Vegas dog) and winning 34-10.
This week's Sleeper game is #27 Missouri at #36 Florida (UF - 3). The Sleeper game is 3-3 on the season, hitting the Louisville-Clemson game dead on the number last week, picking the Tigers by 7.
The Toilet Bowl was a loss last week, with UMass getting win #1, putting us at 2-4 on the year. Let's try again with a real kicker, #126 New Mexico State at #127 Idaho. They may be ranked lower, but the Vandals are a 4.5 point pick.
