BC Interruption's ACC Power Rankings: Week 5

How far can the red hot Terrapins rise?

Mitch Stringer-USA TODAY Sports

The fourth week is in the books and the biggest stunner so far has to be the Maryland Terrapins. The soon-to-be Big Ten team has risen from last in the conference to a stunning fourth.  And as much as we hate to admit it, they have made believers out of most of us on this blog. Without further delay, here is the rankings for this week.

1. Clemson Tigers

Last Week: 1
Highest Selection: 1
Lowest Selection: 2

Opponent: Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Clemson 35, Wake Forest 17. If Clemson was going to "Clemson" a game this season, this would be the absolute worst for them to blow. I just don't see it happening. Wake is awful, and Clemson should be able to contain whatever Wake throws at them on offense. Easy win for the Tigers.

2. Florida St. Seminoles

Last Week: 2
Highest Selection: 1
Lowest Selection: 2

Opponent: Boston College Eagles

Prediction: Florida State 38, Boston College 10. Apparently last week's beating of Bethune Cookman was enough for one voter to put FSU at the top of their ballot. I will get more into my prediction on the Boston College game in Final Thoughts post tomorrow, but put it this way, I think it's going to be ugly.

3. Miami Hurricanes

Last Week: 3
Highest Selection: 3
Lowest Selection:3

Opponent: South Florida Bulls

Prediction: Miami 42, South Florida 7. Again the Hurricanes come in as a unanimous #3. They get the Bulls this week, who could possibly be the worst FBS team in the country. They are awful, and the Hurricanes are going to do unholy things to them on Saturday.

4. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Last Week: 5
Highest: 4
Lowest: 5

Opponent: Virginia Tech Hokies

Prediction: Georgia Tech 24, Virginia Tech 7. A nice solid win last weekend for GT as they took the Tar Heels pretty easily. I am selling hard on the Hokies, and the Yellow Jacket defense is going to give the Hokies sputtering offense fits.

5. Maryland Terrapins

Last Week: 8
Highest: 4
Lowest: 6

Opponent: Bye

After weeks of having at least one doubter who kept Maryland low in the rankings, the Terrapins apparently won him over with a schalacking of West Virginia on Saturday. This team appears to be the real deal, C.J. Brown is an good ACC quarterback and the defense is legit. Suddenly the Terps have gone from a "should win" to a "tough game" for BC.

6. Virginia Tech Hokies

Last Week: 6
Highest Selection: 5
Lowest Selection:8

Opponent: Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Prediction: Georgia Tech 24, Virginia Tech 7. As I said before, I am selling hard on the Hokies. This team is a few losses away from falling to the basement of the ACC. Logan Thomas is not a Heisman candidate, he never was, and the offense is putrid. How Virginia Tech is actually still ranked 6th is a testimony to that defense which has kept them in games they have no business winning.

7t. North Carolina Tar Heels

Last Week: 4
Highest Selection: 6
Lowest Selection:10

Opponent: East Carolina Pirates

Prediction: North Carolina 24, East Carolina 21. North Carolina didn't have a great showing last weekend against the Yellow Jackets, but ECU who did well against the Hokies a few weeks back should be a win.

7t. N.C. State Wolfpack

Last Week: 7
Highest: 6
Lowest: 9

Opponent: Central Michigan Chippewas

Prediction: N.C. State 38, Central Michigan 10. Have to give the Wolfpack credit, they did an admirable job last week against Clemson. Their defense did a solid job containing Tahj Boyd, and the N.C. State run game broke off some big runs. They just ran out of gas.

9. Pittsburgh Panthers

Last Week: 9
Highest: 7
Lowest: 12

Opponent: Virginia Cavaliers

Prediction: Pittsburgh 38, Virginia 35. A second straight week of an explosive offense for the Panthers as they racked up 50 plus points against Duke last weekend. But man their defense is awful. I'd expect a shoot out with the Hoos, with Pitt scoring just enough to win.

10. Virginia Cavaliers

Last Week: 8
Highest: 8
Lowest: 11

Opponent: Pittsburgh Panthers

11. Boston College Eagles

Last Week: 11
Highest: 9
Lowest: 13

Opponent: Florida St. Seminoles

Prediction: Florida State 38, Boston College 10. I really want to see BC be competitive in this game. I really do. I just can't envision them slowing down both the FSU running game and passing game all while having any sort of offense.

12t. Duke Blue Devils

Last Week: 12
Highest: 9
Lowest: 12

Opponent: Troy Trojans

Prediction:  Duke 35, Troy 31. Just like Pittsburgh the Blue Devils showed that they have an explosive offense. However just like the Panthers they showed they don't have any semblance of a defense.

12t. Syracuse Orange

Last Week: 13
Highest: 10
Lowest: 13

Opponent: Bye

Syracuse took Tulane to the woodshed last weekend. None of our voters are buying them yet, but that will come if they can beat a legit team in the future.

14. Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Last Week: 14
Highest: 14
Lowest: 14

Opponent: Clemson Tigers

Prediction: Clemson 35, Wake 17. Wake beat Army, after Josh Harris took control of the game last week, but it took a long time for the Demon Deacons to get there. And that's against Army. Clemson is a whole other beast, one with point fanged teeth and that can hurt you.
