Last year the lone positive story for the Boston College Eagles was the emergence of Alex Amidon. He set school records with catches and yards, and became the most reliable threat for quarterback Chase Rettig. Many expected he would improve in 2012, but it's hard to imagine anyone guessing he would become one of the elite wide receivers in the ACC.
Now going into the 2013 season, let's take a look at some candidates who could have a break out year for Steve Addazio and the Eagles. There are multiple candidates, and I might leave off a few, so let's get cracking:
WR Spiffy Evans
With Bobby Swigert out for the season and Johnathan Coleman off the team, someone is going to have to become the 2nd receiver for the offense. Evans has all the tools to be that player. He is fast and quick, his hands need a little work, but could he be the receiver we here a lot from this year? Or will it be someone like Iowa transfer Marcus Grant, or youngsters like Joel Zoungrana, Dan Crimmins, or Harrison Jackson?
RB Myles Willis
Boston College's lack of depth at running back is scary. It's Andre Williams, possibly Tahj Kimble, and then a whole bunch of question marks. Given the health concerns of both Williams and Kimble I wouldn't be surprised if Willis comes out of camp on the depth chart. Late spring reports named him one of the most impressive recruits to come out of Georgia this year, and I really think he could become a name we hear a lot of by the end of the year.
LB Kevin Pierre-Louis
An All ACC Linebacker on the breakout list? Yes. KPL has had three good years with BC, making some solid plays, battling injuries, but also being mucked up in Spaz's soft defense. Don Brown is shooting for an aggressive defense this year, making big plays etc. If there is one player in the linebacker corp who will benefit most from this, I would take KPL. He is instinctive, and explosive on the hits, and I project him to make some game changing plays this year. Another linebacker to consider? Steven Daniels.
CB Al Louis-Jean
Possibly one of the biggest recruits that Frank Spaziani ever got to BC, ALJ is still a sophomore after missing last year with a foot injury (damn turf). As CB1 it's going to be up to ALJ to take on some of the nation's premier receivers like Michael Campanaro, Sammy Watkins and Marqise Lee. With more blitzing and single coverage, it will be up to him to make the plays, and there may be some big games where we end up talking about his pass coverage.
OL Frank Taylor / Win Homer
We know where we stand after last year in terms of the offensive line. It was an absolute train wreck. Emmett Cleary and John Wetzel are gone, Matt Patchan is in, and a new coaching staff will have to look at their chips to see who they want on the front line protecting Rettig. Both of these kids haven't had a chance to start or play yet, but both come in with solid pedigrees. Could BC possibly line up Homer at the other tackle, and slot in Taylor at guard?
DT Kaleb Ramsey
This poor kid has been sapped by poor schemes, and injuries the past two years. He is coming back for his last year at the Heights. Someone is going to have to step up the pressure on the defensive line, and haven't we been talking about it being him for the past two seasons?
Those are just some of the possibilities to have a break out season in 2013. There isn't a lot of star power on this team, so if they expect to win players are going to have to step up.
