BC Interruption's ACC Power Rankings: Week 6

Our voters have laid out how the ACC appears after 5 weeks. Where did Boston College land?

Mike Zarrilli

Another week, and some huge changes for the ACC Power Rankings. Even with a loss BC rocketed back up the charts to a respectable eighth, while UNC's butt whooping at the hands of ECU put the Tar Heels in a full fledged free fall down the poll. Let's take a look at the rankings, and previews for this weekend's games.

1. Clemson Tigers

Last Week: 1
Highest Selection: 1
Lowest Selection: 2

Opponent: Syracuse Orange

Prediction: Clemson 42, Syracuse 21. The Tigers travel up to the Carrier Dome for this weekend's matchup with the Orange. I keep waiting for Clemson to Clemson, but I don't think it will be happening this week. Having Tajh Boyd and Sammy Watkins on turf is just going to be too much for the Orange and Clemson will romp easily.

2. Florida St. Seminoles

Last Week: 2
Highest Selection: 1
Lowest Selection: 3

Opponent: Maryland Terrapins

Prediction: Florida State 24, Maryland 21. Part of me really wanted to pick an upset here because after what I saw last weekend it is clear that a talented, deep, disciplined team could beat the Seminoles. However Maryland is playing without their two top corners and Jameis Winston is going to cash in on that. It's going to be a very close game, and I expect this will be a fun one to watch.

3. Miami Hurricanes

Last Week: 3
Highest Selection: 2
Lowest Selection: 4

Opponent: Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Prediction: Miami 20, Georgia Tech 10. This game matches up very well for the Hurricanes. Georgia Tech of course runs the option, and the U has a very good rushing defense. I expect the Canes to frustrate GT's offense all game, and put up just enough points to win it.

4t. Maryland Terrapins

Last Week: 5
Highest: 4
Lowest: 6

Opponent: Florida St. Seminoles

Maryland continues to rise up the rankings, now up to a solid tie for fourth place. But that could all change this weekend when they have their first matchup against an ACC opponent, FSU. As I mentioned above, I think Maryland will hold their own against the ACC champ, but in the end the losses in the secondary will be too much for the Terps.

4t. Virginia Tech Hokies

Last Week: 5
Highest Selection: 4
Lowest Selection:6

Opponent: North Carolina Tar Heels

Prediction: Virginia Tech 17, North Carolina 13. This game is going to be UG-LY. Both teams have offenses that are painful to watch and defenses that should keep this game close. One of two things will happen that result in the Hokies gaining the edge. Either Logan Thomas will be completely irrelevant for 3 quarters and 10 minutes and make one play that makes him look like a hero, or there will be another example of Beamer ball. Take your pick.

6. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Last Week: 4
Highest: 4
Lowest: 6

Opponent: Miami Hurricanes

Prediction: Miami 20, Georgia Tech 10. As I mentioned above, Tech matches up poorly against the Hurricanes, and it is played in Miami as well, which may not constitute as much of a home field advantage, but hey, Miami is good again which means all their fairweather fans can come out of hiding.

7. Pittsburgh Panthers

Last Week: 9
Highest: 7
Lowest: 10

Opponent: Bye

Prediction: This team confuses the heck out of me. One week they can't stop anyone, the next their defense looks all world.

8. Boston College Eagles

Last Week: 11
Highest: 8
Lowest: 9

Opponent: Army Black Knights

Prediction: Boston College 38, Army 14. Finally the game was confirmed by Brad Bates today, so we can all celebrate a home game against the Black Knights. Yay. BC fell flat against Army last year, but as we saw last weekend this isn't the same group of guys that looked so unprepared. BC will put up points, and hold Army's offense at bay.

9. N.C. State Wolfpack

Last Week: 7
Highest: 7
Lowest: 11

Opponent: Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Prediction: N.C. State 35, Wake Forest 7. Two straight strong weeks for the Wolfpack set them up for an epic matchup against the ACC's punching bag.

10. Duke Blue Devils

Last Week: 12
Highest: 8
Lowest: 13

Opponent: Bye

Prediction: I don't like to toot my own horn, no wait a minute yes I do, but I predicted almost the identical score for Duke-Troy last weekend. Only off 3 points for Duke. Go me.

11. North Carolina Tar Heels

Last Week: 7
Highest Selection: 9
Lowest Selection: 13

Opponent: Virginia Tech Hokies

Prediction: Virginia Tech 17, North Carolina 13. Remember the beginning of the year when everyone got the sads because BC's Coastal matchup was going to be VT/UNC? The Heels are a mess, Brynn Renner is inconsistent, and that defense got ripped apart by ECU last weekend to a tune of 55 points.

12. Virginia Cavaliers

Last Week: 8
Highest: 10
Lowest: 13

Opponent: Ball St. Cardinals

Prediction: Virginia 24, Ball State 21. Looking at the win loss record of Ball State you would think that they could win against Virginia, but Ball State hasn't beaten anyone of relevance. Could be an upset, but I think UVA will pull this one off.

13. Syracuse Orange

Last Week: 12
Highest: 11
Lowest: 13

Opponent: Clemson Tigers

Syracuse gets Clemson at home, which is a mixed bag for the Orange. On the one hand at least they don't have to travel to Death Valley, on the other they are going to play Clemson turf.

14. Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Last Week: 14
Highest: 14
Lowest: 14

Opponent: N.C. State Wolfpack

Prediction: Poor poor Wake.
