Hockey Interruption: #2 BC Women Grind Out Win, Sweep SLU

Freshman Andie Anastos scored the game winner as the Eagles sweep St. Lawrence at Conte Forum and improve to 3-0-0 on the season.

I know, everyone's watching the football game. But a quick hockey update:

After two very easy wins to start the season, the #2 Boston College women's hockey team was pushed hard today by St. Lawrence in the back end of a two game set at Conte Forum. BC rose to the occasion, with freshman Andie Anastos potting a late game-winner to give the Eagles a 2-1 win and a sweep of a quality opponent.

Following a scoreless first period, BC struck first at 3:46 of the second period, with Emily Field knocking one home on a scramble in front of the net. emily Pfalzer and Haley McLean notched the assists.

Just past halfway through the period, St. Lawrence responded with a goal by Dayle Wilkinson, tying the game at 1; the game would remain tied at the end of two.

BC came on very strong in the third period, carrying the play for large stretches of the game. Stephanie Lemieux appeared to score her first career goal with around 10 minutes left in the game, but it was disallowed, and the frustration continued to mount  for BC.

After failing to convert on a couple of power play opportunities, the stage was set for Anastos to be the hero of the day, scoring an unassisted goal with just over seven minutes to play to win the game and improve to 3-0-0 (1-0-0 Hockey East).

The Eagles face two more ECAC foes next weekend at Conte in what could be another pair of stiff tests. They host Yale next Saturday at 2 PM, then face Dartmouth next Sunday, also at 2.

Keep an eye on the out of town scoreboard tonight; Minnesota and Wisconsin are back at it at 5 PM. If Wisconsin can knock off the Gophers and end their 52-game winning streak, BC may well move into the #1 spot in the polls for the first time in program history.
