Boston College soccer midfielder Kyle Bekker has signed a contract with Major League Soccer, ensuring that he'll be available for Thursday's MLS SuperDraft. The Oakville, Ontario native finished his senior year with one goal and four assists. Bekker ranks second all-time in assists (22), eighth in points (56) and 10th in goals (17).
The midfielder figures to be a high draft pick in Thursday's MLS SuperDraft. According to MLSsoccer.com's latest mock draft, Bekker is projected to be a first round pick according to all three draft experts. MLSsoccer.com's Jason Saghini has the midfielder being taken by Toronto FC with the #3 overall pick:
"The left midfielder from BC is going to be coveted by all three Canadian teams, so Toronto don't have the opportunity to trade down and take him later with Vancouver prowling at No. 5."
The other two draft experts have Bekker taken with the no. 5 (Vancouver Whitecaps) and no. 18 (Montreal Impact) picks in the first round. If selected, Bekker would become the highest fifth former Boston College Eagle to be selected in the MLS SuperDraft, joining:
2009: 30 (2). Paul Gerstenberger, D, Columbus Crew
2005: 43 (4). Guy Melamed, D, Colorado Rapids
2003: 29 (3). Kyle Singer, GK, New England Revolution
2003: 48 (5). Casey Schmidt, F, Colorado Rapids
Best of luck to Bekker, Colin Murphy and Charlie Rugg at this week's MLS Combine and the SuperDraft on Thursday.
