It's almost here, folks. The start of another exciting Boston College football season. With a little over 54 hours before we kick off the season, you're probably wondering how this is all gonna go down. Lucky you, BC Interruption has got you covered. The BC Interruption staff shares their predictions for the season below, and we'd like to hear yours as well.
This serves as your official 2012 Boston College football season prediction thread. Bonus points for answering the two additional questions below.
Go Eagles!
A.J Black
Record: 5-7 (2-6 ACC)
Wins: Miami, Maine, @ Army, Maryland, Notre Dame
Losses: @ Northwestern, Clemson, @ Florida State, @ Georgia Tech, @ Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, @ N.C. State
What game is most crucial to your overall season predictions coming true?
I battled back and forth on the Wake Forest game. Part of me thinks the Eagles could sneak a win out here and end the season 6-6. But the Deacons always play the Eagles well, Tanner Price will cause our secondary fits, and it's on the road. Also in terms of the season tinkering on the brink of disaster, I look at this first game against Miami. BC has to win this. If they lose, fans are going to assume this is going to be just like the last two seasons, home field advantage in games BC needs to win will be gone, and everything will turn negative again. BC needs to come out against the Canes and set the tone for this season. Score points, and shut down the opposing offense.
What is one bold prediction you have for the 2012 season?
Chase Rettig will come close to doubling his touchdown production from 2011. Doug Martin has done wonders for offenses less talented than the Eagles. I think this is going to be the year Chase finally breaks out. BC will need to score points to win, as their defense probably isn't going to be as stout as they have been in years past. Rettig will be throwing the ball alot, and I feel like BC will move the ball much more efficiently than they did last year. I suspect Rettig will finish the year with somewhere between 20-24 touchdown passes.
Jeff Martyn
Record: 7-5 (4-4 ACC)
Wins: Miami, Maine, Clemson, @ Army, Maryland, @ Wake Forest, Notre Dame
Losses: @ Northwestern, @ Florida State, @ Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, @ N.C. State
What game is most crucial to your overall season predictions coming true?
The Miami game is the most crucial game for BC to win in order for my season prediction of 7-5 to come true. If BC can beat Miami to start things off winning three of their next four after that seems very likely, then with seven games remaining including Maryland, Wake Forest, NC State, and Georgia Tech who should all be unranked, winning three of those seems likely as well. If however BC loses to Miami, I'd go back to thinking that BC will only win two out of conference games and hoping that they win 2 or 3 ACC games giving them a 4-8 or 5-7 season.
What is one bold prediction you have for the 2012 season?
BC will win three of their four marquee home games. Out of Miami, Clemson, Notre Dame, and Virginia Tech, BC will win three. The home schedule is great this season and it is a shame the expectations for the team are low given that but I think they can and will still three big home wins.
Grant Salzano
Record: 8-4 (5-3 ACC)
Wins: Miami, Maine, Clemson, @ Army, Maryland, @ Wake Forest, Notre Dame, @ N.C. State
Losses: @ Northwestern, @ Florida State, @ Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech
What game is most crucial to your overall season predictions coming true?
I completely agree with Jeff here. Miami is going to completely determine the direction of this team. Beat Miami, everyone's feeling good, and you there's confidence that we have a good shot to rattle off a few quality wins early and take pressure off everyone. Even an early loss against Northwestern or Clemson will be shook off with a "hey, you can't win 'em all."
Lose to Miami, and this season is going feature the exact same face-palm, head-desk, [noun]-[noun], frustration as last year. The first loss will be bad enough but the second loss will almost certainly come soon after against the aforementioned Wildcats or Tigers, and doom and gloom will abound on the Heights.
What is one bold prediction you have for the 2012 season?
We're going to be in the Atlantic title hunt. We may not be there at the end, but a well-timed loss early against Northwestern instead of Clemson will keep us in the discussion even after a loss to Florida State. Even a loss to Georgia Tech won't completely stamp out hope on the Heights, because let's face it, Florida State ain't goin' undefeated (sad face... kind of).
Conrad Kaczmarek
Record: 5-7 (3-5 ACC)
Wins: Miami, Maine, @ Army, Maryland, @ Wake Forest
Losses: @ Northwestern, Clemson, @ Florida State, @ Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, @ N.C. State
What game is most crucial to your overall season predictions coming true?
It's sad, but probably the Wake Forest game. We know that Maryland is going to be pretty terrible and then it will be BC and Wake Forest at the bottom parts of the ACC. That's a game that might differentiate the two teams.
Brian Favat
Record: 5-7 (3-5 ACC)
Wins: Miami, Maine, @ Army, Maryland, @ Wake Forest
Losses: @ Northwestern, Clemson, @ Florida State, @ Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, @ N.C. State
What game is most crucial to your overall season predictions coming true?
The @ Wake Forest game is the most crucial for my 5-7 prediction to come true. Spaz needs to prove that he can win a game decisively on the road in the ACC. Wake Forest is one of the two teams that Boston College is clearly more talented than in the Atlantic Division. To date, the Eagles have lost road games to teams they were expected to lose to and beat the teams they should have beat by the narrowest of margins (@ Virginia, @ Maryland, @ Duke, @ Wake Forest, @ Syracuse). A decisive road win in Winston-Salem is a must if the Eagles are going to get back / close to bowl eligibility.
What is one bold prediction you have for the 2012 season?
A game will go to overtime and BC will lose. Boston College is a perfect 4-0 in overtime games since joining the ACC. This season that perfect OT record gets its first blemish. Based on either some conservative Spaz game management or a bad bounce, the Eagles will find themselves playing in OT where their luck finally runs out.
