Boston College football released its depth chart for their opener against Miami. And like always, Frank Spaziani and the coaching staff make some interesting decisions.
Quarterback:
- 11 Chase Rettig - JR
- 8 Josh Bordner - SO
No big surprises there. Rettig has been the starter since day 1. Interesting that Spaz didn't do the Josh Bordner or Dave Shinskie at QB2 that he did for most of last season. Also will Bordner get a few snaps in an option formation?
Halfback:
- Andre Williams - JR
- Tahj Kimble - SO
Where is Deuce Finch? I know he is banged up, but not seeing him on the two deep puts me in full panic mode. Assume he will be the starter come Monday, but might be sitting out a few practices to rest up. Williams and Kimble are fine, just need them to stay healthy.
Wide Receivers:
- Alex Amidon - JR
- Donte Elliott - SR
- Johnathan Coleman - JR
- Dan Crimmins - FR
- Spiffy Evans - SO OR Colin Larmond, Jr. - SR
Colin Larmond Jr OR Spiffy Evans? That better just be code for we are going to be running a lot of four wide receiver sets because I don't want BC's two top receivers from 2011 on the bench. Dan Crimmins? Doug Martin really must want that TE/WR hybrid out there, and without Brian Miller, Crimmins must be the answer. And no Harrison Jackson? He must have a bigger upside than Donte Elliott.
Tight End:
- TE 87 C.J. Parsons - SO
- 46 Dave Bowen - R-FR OR Liam Porter - R-FR
Where is Jarrett Darmstatter, I thought he was going to be the starter. Is he hurt now too? Don't know much about Bowen (other than he is a converted OL) and Porter. Depth is starting to worry me here.
Left Tackle:
- Emmett Cleary - SR
- Dan Lembke - R-FR
Left Guard:
- Bobby Vardaro - SO
- Eddie Meredith - R-FR
- Andy Gallik - SO
- Paul Gaughan - R-FR
Right Guard:
- Ian White - JR
- Seth Betancourt - SO
Right Tackle:
- John Wetzel - SR
- Aaron Kramer - SO
Hurray! A position with no surprises. Very happy that the offensive line made it through summer camp without any major injuries. This is key, as this group basically has now had a full year to meld together. I like it.
Defensive Ends:
- Brian Mihalik - SO
- Mehdi Abdesmad - SO
- Kasim Edebali - JR
- Connor Wujciak - R-FR
Exactly what I expected. Hopefully Abdesmad gets a few snaps, sounds like he had an excellent summer and could be a difference maker on the line.
Defensive Tackles:
- Kaleb Ramsey - SR
- Jaryd Rudolph - JR
- Dominic Appiah - SO
- Dillon Quinn - SR
Honestly I really like the possibilities here. Earlier this year, I thought that defensive tackle was an area of weakness, but Ramsey and Appiah are solid starters, and if Appiah can continue to grow as a player he could be a monster. Surprised he got the start over Quinn though.
SLB:
- Steele Divitto - JR
- Tim Joy - FR
MLB:
- Nick Clancy - SR
- Nick Lifka - R-FR
WLB:
- Kevin Pierre-Louis - JR
- Sean Duggan - SO
After a very strong summer Nick Clancy gets the nod at MLB. After all the talk this summer, I am surprised that Steven Daniels didn't make it on the two deep. Sean Duggan is up there, and with KPL playing dinged up most of the summer, you have to expect SD will get some reps during the game so I am not too worried that Duggan is only listed as a backup. Bravo to Tim Joy for making it on the two deep his first game on the Heights.
Field Corner:
- Manuel Asprilla - SO
- Bryce Jones - FR
Back Corner:
- Sean Sylvia - SO
- Ameer Richardson - R-FR
Sean Sylvia at corner? That is certainly a surprise as he played mostly FS during the 2011 season. Not sure what to make of this. And where is Dominique Williams and C.J. Jones? Injuries/rehab I assume, though that information isn't listed anywhere. As I have been all summer, I am concerned about the depth at this position.
Strong Safety:
- Jim Noel - SR
- Justin Simmons - FR
Free Safety:
- Spenser Rositano - SO
- Josh Keyes - SO
Fine here. Jim Noel is probably the strongest and most talented player in the BC secondary. A little surprised that Rositano is starting over Keyes, as it sounded like Josh had a strong summer.
Punt Returner:
- Spenser Rositano - SO
- Spiffy Evans - FR
Kick Returner:
- Spiffy Evans - SO
- Alex Amidon - JR
Kicker:
- Nate Freese - JR
- Alex Howell - R-FR
Punter:
- Gerald Levano - SR
- Alex Howell - R-FR
Nate Freese and Gerald Levano are both getting the start at kicker and punter, as expected. Spenser Rositano as a punt returner? That's the first I have heard of that.
A few surprises in there, make sure to leave your thoughts/concerns in the comments.
