While we still have to wait another week for the Boston College football season to kickoff, the other football program got things started on the right foot this afternoon. The Eagles men's soccer team opened up its 2011 campaign with a 2-1 win over the host Quinnipiac Bobcats. Playing without senior midfielder Kyle Bekker and forward Charlie Rugg, the Eagles got goals from senior Kevin Mejia and Jason Abbott in the match's first 20 minutes.
Mejia opened the scoring in the 15th minute, while Jason Abbott made it 2-0 less than two minutes later with his first goal as an Eagle. Boston College (1-0-0) was outshot 6-4 in the first half and 11-10 overall, but senior goalie Justin Luthy made five saves to help preserve the victory.
Quinnipiac forward William Daniels cut the lead in half in the 59th minute and the Bobcats nearly drew even when Erik Panzer clanked one off the post.
BC's next game is on Monday as they host Boston University in the home opener at the Newton Campus field. Admission is free and the game starts at 5 PM.
Go Eagles!
