Boston College announced this afternoon that Athletic Director Gene DeFilippo will be announcing that he will be retiring on September 30th. DeFilippo, who has run the Boston College athletic department for twelve years, will be making a formal announcement this evening. Before coming to Boston College, Gene held positions at Kentucky, Villanova and South Carolina-Spartanburg.
DeFilippo has been leading the Boston College Eagles since 1997. He was well-known for his hot / cold relationships amongst BC fans. When Gene came to BC he helped a program mired in a gambling scandal to rise above it and brought about success in many different areas of athletics; all the while keeping BC at the top of the class in academics and fundraising.
DeFilippo played a critical role in leading the Eagles from the Big East to the ACC back in 2005, executing a rather brilliant political situation and exiting the Big East to join the much stronger ACC. However he came under fire the previous season for comments he made about ESPN and conference realignment, his relationship with Frank Spaziani and critical comments he made about the BC fanbase.
UPDATE 1: DeFilippo will remain on the job until September 30. Beginning October 1, Senior Associate Athletics Director John Kane will serve as interim director until a successor is named.
UPDATE 2: Here is the school's official press release.
