A total of 91 current and former ACC athletes and coaches will participate in next week's 2012 Summer Olympics. Only one of those 91 Olympians hail from Boston College.
The Eagles' 2012 Olympic hopes lie solely with Laura Georges, a defender on the French football (the other football) team. Georges was a three-year letterwinner at BC from 2004-06. Georges played in a total of 47 games over three seasons at BC, earning All-ACC first-team honors twice as well as being named a Hermann Trophy semifinalist in 2006.
The 2006 team finished 12-7-3 and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAAs before bowing out to Penn State (0-1).
Professionally, Georges is the captain of the French club Olympique Lyonnais of the Division 1 Féminine. In international play, Georges has participated in both the 2003 World Cup and the 2005 UEFA Women's Championship. She has three goals in 102 caps for the French National team.
France will be making its first ever appearance in the Olympics for women's soccer. Georges and the French National team open up the London games with a matchup against Team USA, the defending gold medalists. France faces the US this Wednesday, July 25 (noon Eastern), and follows that up with games against North Korea (7/28 at 2:45 PM) and Colombia (7/31 at 12:15 PM).
Best of luck to Georges and the French women in this year's 2012 Summer Olympics. Except when they face the United States in the Group G opener, of course. Go Eagles!
