Last Friday, the Boston College baseball team released the 2013 schedule. The 56-game schedule begins with 18 straight road games -- 19 with the annual exhibition game against the Sox -- before opening up the home schedule on Wednesday, March 20 against Northeastern.
The season begins at the Country Inn and Suites Tournament, hosted by Elon, in North Carolina. BC faces Virginia Commonwealth, Marist and Elon. After the annual exhibition with the Sox on Thursday, February 21 in Fort Myers, the Eagles then head to the Keith LeClair Classic hosted by East Carolina where they'll face Ohio, Illinois and ECU.
The ACC schedule begins on March 8 when the Eagles will travel to Florida State for a three game series. BC also travels to Georgia Tech (March 15-17), Wake Forest (April 19-21) and Maryland (May 16-18). The Eagles host North Carolina (March 22-24), Clemson (April 5-7), N.C. State (April 12-14), Miami (April 26-28) and Virginia Tech (May 3-5) at home in ACC play this season. BC misses #35 ranked Virginia on this year's regular season schedule.
From the conference, seven programs are ranked among the top 35 of the 2013 Collegiate Baseball preseason poll -- #2 North Carolina (46-16), #11 N.C. State (43-20), #17 Georgia Tech (38-26), #19 Florida State (50-17), #27 Clemson (35-28), #28 Miami (36-23) and #35 Virginia (39-19-1). All seven earned NCAA postseason berths in 2012. In addition, 2013 opponent East Carolina (36-24-1) is ranked 37th in the preseason poll, while eventual ACC newcomer Louisville (41-22) is ranked 22nd.
This is likely the last season for the current ACC baseball scheduling format. Starting next season, the conference will add Pittsburgh's baseball program (Syracuse does not field a varsity program). Louisville and Notre Dame could also join starting in 2014. Post-expansion, the ACC Baseball Championship will feature 10 teams in a six-day event.
Boston College is looking to improve on a 22-33 (10-20 ACC) finish in 2012 under second year coach Mike Gambino.
