Yesterday was Gene DeFilippo's last day serving as Boston College Athletic Director. Interim AD John Kane takes over effective today until a successor is named. But just who is John Kane?
Kane has been at Boston College for over 30 years. He most recently served as Senior Associate A.D. -- Gene's right-hand man -- since February 1998. Prior to assuming the Senior Associate A.D. role, Kane spent six years as the department's associate athletic director/operations and 11 years before that as the director of the Plex.
As Senior Associate A.D., Kane oversaw the sports medicine, strength and conditioning and equipment operations.
Prior to BC, Kane was the head track and field coach at Bentley (1977-80). He also served as the commissioner of the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association for 17 years as well as the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field subcommittee from 2000 to 2004.
From reading the few bits of information written on the Boston College A.D. search, it's expected to be a short run as Director of Athletics for John Kane. But until a successor for Gene DeFilippo is named, Kane is our guy. Best of luck to Kane in his new role, and best wishes to DeFilippo on his retirement.
