Sean Renfree tied a school record with 40 completions and scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 1-yard run with just under 10 minutes left to lead Duke to a 20-19 victory over Boston College in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams on Saturday.

Cold reality for BC’s Nate Freese (BostonHerald.com)
Freese said it didn’t matter that the ball wasn’t positioned in the center of the field, and it clearly wasn’t a focus for BC coach Frank Spaziani. "We thought we’d make it and get the first down," Spaziani said of the third-down play call. "He’s got to make it — middle, schmiddle."

"We didn’t make enough plays," BC coach Frank Spaziani said. "We had a chance to make some plays. We left them out there both offensively and defensively, as well as kicking. We certainly have to run the ball a lot better. We can’t be dropping back all the time and throwing the ball. We played some defense and stopped them, but we didn’t get stops when we needed to. We got some stops at the end again, but too little, too late."

Plenty for Chase Rettig to rue in loss (BostonHerald.com)
"There’s one that will stick with me and I think it was to Bobby early in the second half," Rettig said. "We had talked about that play at halftime and I just didn’t have a really good vision of where he was at the time. . . . If I had maybe waited a little longer, I could have seen where he was breaking open to and delivered a little bit better ball."

Missed kicks costly as BC football falls to 0-3 (The Boston Globe)
"I don’t think there was a breakdown,’’ said BC linebacker Luke Kuechly, who again was a one-man demolition crew with 23 tackles, 17 of them solo. "They were chipping on us. That’s kind of what we wanted to happen. The reason why they scored was two big plays. If you want to play football on defense, you can’t let plays cut you up and that’s what happened.’’

"We had our chances,'' said BC coach Frank Spaziani. "Disappointing. We didn't make enough plays.''

"That's between me and Nate, man," Kuechly said. "I would trust Nate on any kick, man. He's probably one of my best friends. And I trust Nate on any kick, man, no matter what the situation is he's gonna put it through a great percent of the time. If it's out there again I'm gonna let him kick it again."

Duke gets first ACC win of 2011 (ESPN ACC Blog)
For Boston College, this is a troubling start which seems to only worsen given the tough schedule that lies ahead. The bye week could not come fast enough for the Eagles, who could use some time to regroup. Massachusetts should be a W for Boston College, and BC fans should expect that, but that's the last breather the Eagles will get this season.

Renfree leads Duke past Boston College 20-19 (ACC NOW)
"We’ve been there before; sometimes things end up on the right side for you," Duke coach David Cutcliffe said after the Blue Devils improved to 1-2 overall, 1-0 in the ACC. "They [the Eagles] feel horrible right now, and we’re singing and celebrating. I’d like to sing a lot more."
