Duke 20, Boston College 19: BC Just Lost To Duke

Boston College just lost to Duke. In football.

I only got to watch parts of the fourth quarter today. That was probably a good thing.

I did get to watch the Nate Freese field goal attempt. And even though I felt nauseous watching that kick clang off the upright, it wasn't Freese's fault that BC lost. There's plenty of blame to go around today, but the loss certainly doesn't fall squarely on Freese's shoulders foot. Duke was simply the better football team today.

The Blue Devils offense outgained BC 465-328, including dropping 384 yards passing on the Eagles depleted secondary. Duke QB Sean Renfree was 40 (!) of 52 for 359 yards and a pair of touchdowns. BC was just 4-13 on third down, and was shut out in the second half ... by a Duke defense that simply is not very good.

This may feel like BC hitting bottom, but I fear that this is only the beginning of a really, really long season. If there's a silver lining in all this, it looks as though Big East football is dead and BC is going to emerge as one of the biggest winners in the conference shuffle. The bad news is that if this team can't beat Duke, we are going to get run off the field when ACC play really starts up on October 8 on the road at Clemson.
