Dan Persa's status for opener still TBD (ESPN College Football Nation Blog)
Although Persa and his coaches are seeing continued progress, the quarterback's status for the opener remains up in the air. Coach Pat Fitzgerald said that while Persa is "really close," he'll continue to consult with the team's orthopedic surgeon and Persa before making a determination on if or how much the quarterback plays against the Eagles. "He's doing more and more each day," Fitzgerald said. "That's encouraging. It's not the Achilles. It's just the strengthening and conditioning."
Alex Amidon: Happy camper (BostonHerald.com)
“Gary used to call him a fart in a frying pan. He was a whirling dervish out there,” said coach Frank Spaziani with a laugh. “He had no idea what was happening, he didn’t know coverages, he didn’t know where to go. It was really restrictive, but now he’s gotten to learn a little bit.”
Hampton Hughes free to settle in at safety (BostonHerald.com)
And Hughes, the son of former Dallas Cowboys safety Randy Hughes, made the most of his opportunity. He had two tackles, an interception and a pair of pass breakups, one of which led to a Jim Noel interception. It remains to be seen whether that’s good enough to earn him the starting job — redshirt freshman Sean Sylvia also had a strong day with a pair of tackles, a pick, and a fumble recovery while going against the first team offense — but Hughes did little to hurt his chances.
