Boston College Daily Links: Dan Persa's Status Still TBD

New, 6 comments

The Eagles completed their final scrimmage of the fall yesterday and all eyes are still on Persa's Achilles ...

Colter now '1b' with Persa on Northwestern QB list (
Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald called quarterback Kain Colter "1b" on Tuesday, implying he’s all but even with Dan Persa. But Fitzgerald also said of Persa: "I fully expect him to start the opener. We’ll see how things go in the next week and a half."

Dan Persa's status for opener still TBD (ESPN College Football Nation Blog)
Although Persa and his coaches are seeing continued progress, the quarterback's status for the opener remains up in the air. Coach Pat Fitzgerald said that while Persa is "really close," he'll continue to consult with the team's orthopedic surgeon and Persa before making a determination on if or how much the quarterback plays against the Eagles. "He's doing more and more each day," Fitzgerald said. "That's encouraging. It's not the Achilles. It's just the strengthening and conditioning."

Alex Amidon: Happy camper (
“Gary used to call him a fart in a frying pan. He was a whirling dervish out there,” said coach Frank Spaziani with a laugh. “He had no idea what was happening, he didn’t know coverages, he didn’t know where to go. It was really restrictive, but now he’s gotten to learn a little bit.”

Hampton Hughes free to settle in at safety (
And Hughes, the son of former Dallas Cowboys safety Randy Hughes, made the most of his opportunity. He had two tackles, an interception and a pair of pass breakups, one of which led to a Jim Noel interception. It remains to be seen whether that’s good enough to earn him the starting job — redshirt freshman Sean Sylvia also had a strong day with a pair of tackles, a pick, and a fumble recovery while going against the first team offense — but Hughes did little to hurt his chances.

Defense dominates in BC's final scrimmage (Boston Globe)
The offense was curtailed by the absence of the two top running backs in Montel Harris (knee) and Andre Williams (ankle). Harris will miss at least the first two games, while Williams expects to be back next week for the opener...Some of the injured players on defense, such as lineman Nate Ramsey [sic], returned to action yesterday, but offensive guard Nate Richman (back) did not return. Also missing was starting cornerback Donnie Fletcher (back)...Freshman defensive back Spenser Rositano (concussion) was held out of the scrimmage but could be back by Sunday when game prep for Northwestern gets serious
