Boston College held it's final scrimmage of the fall today, and again it was the defense that shined. Chase Rettig struggled today, going 20-28 for 174, but FOUR interceptions. Not a good sign with just a week before the season opener against Northwestern but I wouldn't read into it much. Spaz wasn't pleased though:
"Too many turnovers. Frank Spaziani said. "Good that we got them on defense, but some of them were not forced."
Andre Williams as expected missed the scrimmage due to his sprained ankle. Mike Javorski received most of the carries for the Eagles running the ball 10 times for 32 yards. Rolandan Finch carried the ball 7 times for 26 yards and Tahj Kimble carried the ball 4 attempts for 22 yards. If Williams misses the NU game it appears as if Frank Spaziani still hasn't picked a primary running back yet.
The offensive star of the scrimmage was certainly Colin Larmond Jr. who caught ten passes for 89 yards. Larmond has solidified that he will be the #1 receiver going into this season. I have a feeling he is going to have a Richie Gunnell type season this year.
The backup quarterback battle continued between Dave Shinskie and Mike Marscovetra. Shinksie appeared to have the better scrimmage hitting four passes for 28 yards, while Marsco didn't complete a pass. At this point it I would bet that Uncle Dave will be the backup going into the season. Josh Bordner did not play again with a bad back.
On defense converted wide receiver Hampton Hughes who converted to safety five days ago showed flashes of excellence with an interception and two pass break ups. With the dismissal of Okechukwu Okoroha, Hughes may see some playing time this season. Freshman DB Manny Asprilla also had a stellar scrimmage racking up 5 tackles and two pass deflections. Kevin Pierre-Louis and Steele Divitto each recorded a sack.
Only ten days left and lots of questions remain. Will Nathan Richman, Andre Williams, and Kaleb Ramsey be healthy enough to play? How will BC's secondary hold up? Is Chase Rettig the real deal? Who will be the starting halfback?
What questions about this team concern you going into the Northwestern game?
