The Eagles men's soccer team got a big win on the road on Saturday night, knocking off the 24th ranking Virginia Cavaliers 2-1. BC got a goal in the first half from junior Kevin Mejia in the 27th minute of the first half with an assist from Kyle Bekker. The Eagles' Diego Medina-Mendez scored the game-winner at 47:26 of the second half, being Virginia keeper Spencer LaCivita and putting the ball in the back of the net.
Boston College keeper Justin Luthy made four saves on the day, improving to 12-4-0 on the year.
The win was the Eagles' first road victory in the ACC this season. The three points help the Eagles keep pace with North Carolina, Maryland and Duke atop this year's ACC regular season standings. BC is currently tied with Wake Forest for fourth in the conference with 12 points, but the Eagles own the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Deacons.
The Eagles close out the regular season when they host No. 4 North Carolina Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
With a win over the Heels, BC can still claim the ACC's regular season title and #1 seed in the ACC Men's Soccer Championship. The following has to happen this week for the Eagles' to earn the regular season men's soccer title:
-- Boston College defeats North Carolina
-- Wake Forest either defeats or ties Maryland
This would give BC 15 points on the season (5-3-0), edging out Wake Forest (max 15 points, with BC owning the head-to-head), North Carolina (14 points) and Duke (13 points) for the top seed.
At the other end of the spectrum, the Eagles can finish as low as the #6 seed should North Carolina, Virginia and Wake Forest all win this week.
Go Eagles!
