Boston College 3, Boston University 2: Sweeeeeep

The Eagles hockey team finished off a regular season sweep of the Boston University Terriers, downing BU 3-2 in front of 6,150 at Agganis Arena. Steven Whitney, Brian Gibbons and Brian Dumoulin each scored first period goals, giving BC a quick 3-0 first period lead, while John Muse recorded 30 saves in his 14th win of the season.

Last night's win, combined with a pair of wins in December, gives BC its first regular-season sweep of Boston University since the 2003-04 season.

That season, BC won the Hockey East regular season title with a record of 17-4-3, while BU limped to an eighth place Hockey East finish. However, the Terriers got the last laugh that year, bouncing the Eagles from the first round of the Hockey East tournament in three games (3-2 loss, 4-0 win, 4-2 loss).

These two teams will hook up again in a little over two weeks in the first round of the Beanpot Tournament. Despite the regular season sweep -- by a combined score of 17-9, I might add -- the Terriers will probably find a way to win that game. Classic BU.

With the win, the Eagles keep pace with New Hampshire atop the Hockey East standings. UNH won 4-3 in overtime over Providence.

The Eagles host the 3-18-2 UMass Lowell River Hawks tonight at Conte Forum at 7 PM. Lowell is coming off a surprising 6-4 victory at Merrimack.
