Spaziani’s win total has been on a steady decline over the last three years, and the Eagles got off to a miserable 1-6 start in 2011. An injury to running back Montel Harris hampered the offense, but the team also didn’t get much improvement from quarterback Chase Rettig. The Eagles return 16 starters for 2012 and finished last season by winning three out of the final five games. With the ACC moving to 14 teams, Boston College can’t afford to watch the program slip too far.
Loyalty is a funny thing though. Does it make sense to go down with S.S. Spaziani if it means the potential end of your career at a BCS level school? Or is it smarter to recognize the danger in forever having to associate yourself with what will undoubtedly go down as the biggest football coaching disaster at Boston College since Dan Henning replaced Tom Coughlin in 1994 and hop off the ship? DeFilippo has apparently chosen the former and has burned his previously spotless reputation to the ground in the process. Brock, Day, and Sirmans decided discretion was the better part of valor and exited stage right.
"We are disappointed we lost, we played half a game and we needed to sustain for a whole game and we’ve got to move forward and build on the positives," Spaziani said. "The biggest positive is we played with a little bit more emotion throughout the whole game. We came out with emotion, but we need to sustain that through the whole game and we need to build on that and keep moving forward. It’s an emotional game and you’ve got to play with an emotional edge and a little chip."
