"Foster's lunch-pail approach would play well in the Iron City. Ditto his record of building ornery, lock-down defenses. [...] Foster is familiar with Pitt from Virginia Tech's time in the Big East -- the teams clashed annually from 1993-2003 and are scheduled for a home-and-home in 2012 and '13."

David Teel from the Newport News Daily Press says Bud Foster is a good fit for the Pittsburgh job. Whether or not we have to break out the alert system again remains to be seen.

Virginia Tech's staff went the extra mile this past summer -- literally -- to get an edge on defending Georgia Tech's spread option offense. The Hokies have the bye week to prepare for the Yellow Jackets, but their preparation began when defensive coordinator Bud Foster traveled to Iowa to speak with the staff that held Georgia Tech to a season-low nine first downs and 156 yards in the Orange Bowl.

"‘Bud, this is my team, not your team,’" Foster vividly remembers Beamer snarling, followed by the "suggestion" that he shut his mouth. Foster was stunned. Beamer had never said anything like that to him, or anyone else, before. Not during Foster’s days playing for Beamer at Murray State University in 1979 and 1980. Not during the seasons he spent as a graduate assistant and assistant coach at the same school. Not during what was then 18 years together at Tech, where Foster had risen from inside-linebackers coach to co-defensive coordinator in 1995 to sole occupant of the position a year later.

From Boomer Magazine: Apparently you, me and (more famously) Steve Logan weren't the only ones offering advice to Frank Beamer during the 2005 ACCCG loss to FSU. Bud Foster was, too. This feature story on Foster details his relationship with Beamer and why he's stuck around in Blacksburg. (H/T: Kyle Tucker's Twitter)

"Answer me this: VT constantly knocked down for inexperienced defense, yet nobody bats an eyelash at 'Bama being No. 1 despite 9 new starters"

Our boy Josh, on The Twitter. It's an excellent point. Alabama is the preseason No. 1 replacing nine starters while people are questioning our ability to win the Coastal because we have six new starters on D. It has a lot to do with the Tide being the defending champs, but its hard enough to repeat and nearly impossible to do it with nine new starters on D. The Hokies shouldn't be counted out just because they have to replace six guys.

"Changing of the guards at Virginia Tech. Frank Beamer retires, Bud Foster takes over, and AD Jim Weaver steps down. The first is inevitable. The second isn’t a guarantee. And the third could be prompted by health concerns. Foster’s latest agreement will do a good job of keeping him in Blacksburg, though, and it would be a public relations nightmare if Virginia Tech picked anyone else to succeed Beamer."

Annette has 10 predictions for the ACC in the upcoming decade posted, including this one about the Hokies. Can't say I was aware of any health issues facing Weaver. While I haven't agreed with many of the decisions he's made, he keeps Virginia Tech in the black and is responsible for a lot of the capital improvements at Tech over the last decade. His retirement would hurt the athletics department just as much if not more than Beamer's.

"The real reason why Bud Foster, VPI DC, isn’t leaving is because he is overrated. A veritable white cracker version of Charley Strong, just less successful."

Losers With Socks on Bud Foster. Looks like boys at LWS have just as much have for VT as I hate for Tennessee. Though I'm not quite sure what a fuck javelin is. Sounds painful enough.

"Would the DC jobs at Georgia or FSU really help Foster's name recognition? That's debatable, and it's not as if the coaching situations at either of those programs is stable. Bottom line...is there anybody out there that really believes there's an athletic director at a major university in the nation that doesn't already know of Foster's existence and track record?"

"The grass isn’t always greener on the other side. I have a great situation here. It would take something pretty special to get me out of here."

"So what did they do? Play soft coverage and hope Harris made some mistakes? Revamp the offense to catch Miami’s speedy defense off guard? No. Foster and Beamer basically said fuck it, we’re going after Miami. That early fumble by Jacory Harris that set up the Hokies’ first touchdown? Well they did what I said they wouldn’t be able to: Foster dialed up a hide-the-children, all-out, man-to-man blitz with no free safety with the cornerback, Dorian Porch, coming off the short side of the field."

"I’ve got to find a fourth (linebacker). Quillie Odom hasn’t taken the steps I want him to take right now." [...] "Just improvement and learning the position and playing it and having a football IQ and just an awareness of some things," (Bud Foster) said. "I’m disappointed right now. I don’t know if he’s too heavy. I just don’t see the quickness I saw when we recruited him. There’s some things that he’s got to improve on to be an impact guy."
