Ultimate BC Bar Tournament
Ultimate Boston College Bar Tournament Championship Game: (1) Roggies vs (3) Mary Ann's
Here we are ... the final matchup. It's been nearly two months since we kicked off the Ultimate Boston College Bar Tournament and now just two bars remain. We've had upsets, narrow victories, ties and utter blowouts. The two bars left standing are the number one seed Roggies and the bar that most people thought should have been the top seed, Mary Ann's.
Last round had two interesting matchups. CItySide who came into the matchup a higher seed than Mary Ann's was utterly blown out in a stunning rout. On the other hand, Roggies had all it could handle with the cinderella bar Harry's, and ended up winning by only 15 votes.
Voting will go on for a week and end next Monday at 5pm. Spread the word to your friends, because the winner of this matchup will be crowned the 2011 Ultimate Boston College Bar. That is some major bragging rights there for whomever wins.
#1 Roggies
"Roggies is BC heaven for any class in the last decade and a half. Obviously M.A.‘s was the spot before that and still holds a place close to my heart but Roggie’s has been the center of our BC lives for many years now." - DougbushBC
"Roggies is probably my favorite place to go watch a game; they have a ton of TVs on both floors, which always show BC games. There are plenty of tables, never a wait, and a lot of pretty good food. Pizza is available until 2 so even after the drunkest nights, a Big Daddy slice is always in the realm of possibility." - The BC Girls (ACal6888, yanesp, & mek2702)
"Love Roggie's versatility. The upstairs and downstairs sections have a very different feel from one another and either option works depending on the occasion. The food options are solid and there are plenty of TVs on both floors. I've personally enjoyed many a bucket of Molson's at Roggies and have definitely had my fair share of pizza late night. The formidable combo of atmosphere, food and TVs make Roggies' one of the best destinations in Cleveland Circle." - Brian @ BCI
#3 Mary Ann's
"A staple of Cleveland Circle, Mary Ann's is a haven for BC students. It's yellow and green sign is a homing beacon for Superfans. You can go there any night of the week, literally...and people do. For me, the best time to be at Mary Ann's was a weeknight because it was easy, cheap, and didn't break the bank if you decided to splurge elsewhere the following Saturday. I know they've all been said before, but Mary Ann's is the place for all things Hoops Mania, photo hunt, and Amber Boch. I knew I would always find a friend if I chose to walk in that front door. Cheers to Mary Ann's and BC bar tournament finals!" - Joanna, Class of 2005
"I don't think you can find a single bar with a higher percentage of Boston College Eagles day in and day out. Sure, there are lines -- major lines every weekend night Thursday-Sunday -- solely based on the amount of demand for a bar without a single flat screen TV. Still, you have to be amazed. With Buckhunter, Pop-A-Shot, nudie photo hunt, jukebox (dated reference) and a new text message board, there's something for all ages. Remember you are never too old to go to MaryAnn's" - BCRaj

Ultimate Boston College Bar Tournament Final Four: (2) Cityside vs (3) Mary Ann's
In our second matchup of the Final Four we have the favorite Mary Ann's vs. behemoth Cityside. Mary Ann's is playing like a bar with a chip on their shoulder, many complaining that they should have had the #1 seed. Cityside, under new ownership, has taken heat for being an away team bar, but many fans love it there. You can read more about their paths to the Final Four here and the complete bracket can be seen here.
And please if you haven't voted already go and vote in the Harry's/Roggies matchup.
What folks said about #2 Cityside:
Cityside has two personalities. Downstairs is basically a crappy sports bar – lots of TVs, a huge bar, decent bar food, but there isn’t much room to sit, especially after BC games. But, at night, upstairs is like a displaced Mod party without the drinking games: there’s a good DJ- ACal6888, yanesp, and mek2702
CitySide is the place to go when you’re in Cleveland Circle and not drunk enough to walk into MAs. I’ll agree with previous comments that it’s a good spot for alums who may be a little to self conscious to go into MAs. The upstairs is great too on weekends and the food isn’t terrible either- BCMurt09
TV's are everywhere downstairs, usually with five or 6 games going on at one time. They also have a text message video board, which is always worth a laugh when you write "Hey hot blonde bartender...call me". Now under new management, Cityside is even better. Spacier, and open air, it's one of my favorites in this tournament.- BCHysteria
What folks said about #3 Mary Ann's
Ok, what makes me love MAs? Maybe it's the $1.75 Busch Light drafts and the $2.50 G&T's. Maybe it's the jukebox, Hoops Mania and Big Buck Hunter. Maybe it's the free round of shots given to the loser of weekly trivia, or the fact that they settle ties with a chug-off. Maybe it's recognizing every face in the crowd when you walk in. -BKSweeney1

As a freshman, I went to my theology professors office hours to protest a B on a midterm exam. While the padre wouldn’t budge on the grade, he did appease me with a gift of a red "Mary Ann’s STAFF" t-shirt. It was my prize for the next 4 years and landed me more than a few phenomenal pick-up opportunities. Long live MA’s! And drunken buck hunter!- Chicagofire1871

Ultimate Boston College Bar Tournament Final Four: (1) Roggies vs (12) Harry's Bar and Grille
(Evidently I can't read a bracket. Originally I had this set up to be Harry's vs Cityside. It should have been Roggies vs Harry's. So things have been edited to the way they ought to be. Voting will close on Tuesday.)
In our first matchup of the Final Four we have the Cinderella story Harry's Bar and Grille vs. the stalwart of Cleveland Circle, Roggies. Harry's was written off early by many, but has come on strong with their promises of Irish cleansing and BC parties. Roggies is a juggernaut, and a fan favorite. You can read more about their paths to the Final Four here and the complete bracket can be seen here.
Here are some of the things said about Cityside previously in the tournament:
Roggies is probably my favorite place to go watch a game; they have a ton of TVs on both floors, which always show BC games. There are plenty of tables, never a wait, and a lot of pretty good food. Pizza is available until 2 so even after the drunkest nights, a Big Daddy slice is always in the realm of possibility. - The BC Girls (ACal6888, yanesp, & mek2702)
Roggie's even has a downstairs in the evenings. It can get a little sketchy, but not the bad kind, more the funny college story sketchy. And let's be honest, proximity is a huge selling point for this place. You can stager home or opt for the drunken late night BC bus experience. (Joanna)
I am a huge fan of their beer selection, there is a ton of beer on tap (more than Cityside), and the beer towers are a great option for large tables. I don't know if they still have it, but I used to love going there and grabbing an answer tablet and playing video trivia. " (BCHysteria)
#12 Harry's Bar and Grille
I'm a beer drinker so I'm always trying something new from their extensive beer selection and when I'm not sure what to choose the staff there has no trouble suggesting something based on what I'm in the mood to drink- Jennycupcakes1
Vote for the small of stature underdog...Harry's...Like (Doug) Flutie - Heather Mamatey
Harry’s is like Jesus himself, you support him, he gets you into Heaven…you support Harry’s, they take down the sign AND make you an outstanding club sandwich with an ice cold beer.- Bernard Cleaver
Ultimate Boston College Bar Tournament: Final Four Bars Revealed
After weeks of voting, social media politicking and dirty hijinx, the Ultimate Boston College Bar Tournament Final Four is finally read to be unveiled. The second round of the Bar Tournament was rather uneventful, with most bars winning by huge margins. But the Final Four promises to be an epic battle between three of BC's favorites, and a bar that is trying to win the hearts and beer money of BC students and alumni.
1. Roggies
The path has been very easy for this #1 seed, as they have played against a play-in bar and a bar that isn't even in business anymore (whoops). Roggies hasn't run into an opponent that has given them any problem yet. But will the dreaded gameday pricing and swarms of Steelers fans that have named it their official Boston bar bring down Roggies in the end?
First Round: Defeated Who's On First 72%-27%
Second Round: Defeated Joshua Tree 65%-34%
2. Cityside
The first round was certainly interesting for Cityside. Great Scott armed the polls and attacked all that got in their way including our fearless leader Brian, but in the end good prevailed. The second round was much easier for Cityside as they beat underdog An Tua Nua soundly. Many recent graduates wondered why I placed An Tua Nua as a 10 seed, and the second round proved my point.
First Round: Defeated Great Scott's 61%-39%
Second Round:Defeated An Tua Nua 57%-42%
3. Mary Ann's
The favorite to win by many readers, Mary Ann's has shown that it should have deserved that #1 seed. In the first round, they trounced the Chinese restaurant/bar Golden Temple. Mary Ann's has a lot of student votes, but they don't have any Twitter or Facebook presence, which in the end may lead to their down fall.
First Round: Defeated Golden Temple 87% - 12%
Second Round: Defeated Union St. 76%-24%
12. Harry's Bar and Grille
The final underdog left in this tournament, Harry's came out of nowhere to knock out both the Avenue and White Horse. Harry's is the one bar in the tournament that is trying to win their votes through bribery. They already promised to remove the Notre Dame sign from their wall, and if they win it all they plan on throwing a party for the BC-ND game to celebrate. Will this be enough? Or will they fall to one of the staples of BC drinking?
First Round: Defeated The Avenue 52%-47%
Second Round: Defeated White Horse 51%-48%
The Final Four will begin Thursday, with one bar matchup per week until we are crowned a winner on August 26th. We are still looking for people to give a one paragraph story for each bar, so if you are interested please drop me an email at bchysteria at gmail dot com.
Harry's Bar and Grille, Tear Down This Sign!
First the Roman Empire fell in 476 AD, then the Berlin Wall was torn down, and now this. Harry's Bar and Grille has defeated the juggernaut White Horse, and the cursed "Play Like A Champion" sign will be taken down and destroyed. For the first time in history, we the people have enacted change for the common good....in terms of bar decorations. Notre Dame has just lost a major stronghold in the Boston area, and patrons will never have to look at that replica of Irish tyranny ever again. With the end of era, come great opportunity for us, Boston College fans. The management at Harry's will allow us to create our own sign to take the place of the ND sign. But we must come together, and agree upon it. Didn't Abraham Lincoln once say "A house divided will fall?"
Okay, enough of that. Readers, we need to come up with a sign. Something that really shows our pride in Boston College, and not so much bashing our rivalry with our sisters at Notre Dame. Yesterday we had some great ideas submitted via the site and Twitter. Also Brian, Jeff and myself came up with some other ideas. We want to know, what slogans do you like/dislike?
-- A framed picture of this
-- Something simple like: "Harry's Bar and Grille: The New Home for Boston College Superfans"
-- Drink like a champion today! (in BC colors)
-- A cartoon of Coach Spaziani with the caption "The Coach says 'Finish Your Beer' "
-- Just a simple BC Interruption logo
Those are just some of our ideas and I know for a fact that you can come up with better ones than us. If you have your own ideas for a sign, please put them in the comments. Keep the suggestions clean, Harry's does have families that eat there. We will bring this to a vote some time in August.
Ultimate Boston College Bar Tournament: (2) Cityside Vs. (10) An Tua Nua
Welcome back to the BC Interruption Ultimate Boston College Bar Tournament. Our fourth and final quarterfinal matchup pits the 2-seeded CitySide up against the 10-seed An Tua Nua. Voting will last for a week and closes next Monday at 5pm. The complete bracket can be seen here.
The first round was certainly interesting for Cityside. I badmouthed Great Scott, the GS faithful got a hold of it and all out anarchy spilled over to the Great Scott vs. Cityside post. Over 2,000 votes and a handful of commenter bans later and Cityside emerged bloodied and victorious. To comment on Cityside, you get me:
"I have a nostalgic feeling every time I think of Cityside. I spent countless Saturdays and Sundays there, enjoying their food and drinking a beer or five. I have always been a huge fan of their nachos, which is always gigantic and of course full of great fixings. TV's are everywhere downstairs, usually with five or 6 games going on at one time. They also have a text message video board, which is always worth a laugh when you write "Hey hot blonde bartender...call me". Now under new management, Cityside is even better. Spacier, and open air, it's one of my favorites in this tournament."
In another underdog victory, An Tua Nua took out Sunset Grille in a very close first round victory. Many fans were upset with their seeding, but as I said before let the voting do the talking. Could An Tua Nua be the Butler of this tournament? If so Cityside has to be Pittsburgh, standing in the way of the next round. Again, yours truly will serenade you with a story:
"An Tua Nua always holds a special place in my heart. It was the first and only time one of my friends was ever thrown out of a bar. One night we decided to hit up the bar to celebrate Miguel's birthday party. Unbeknownst to us, a kickball league was holding a fundraiser there and for $10 you could have unlimited drinks for two hours. How this is legal? I have no idea. So instead of drinking at a nice pace, Miguel starts going up the bar and ordering two beers at a time, and by 8PM the entire table is covered with Solo cups filled beer. A half hour later and Miguel is passed out, and the bouncer throws us all out. What.a.night."
Ultimate Boston College Bar Tournament: (3) Mary Ann's Vs. (6) Union Street
Welcome back to the BC Interruption Ultimate Boston College Bar Tournament. On tap today is the #3 vs. #6 quarterfinal matchup between Mary Ann's vs.Union Street Bar and Grille. Voting will last for a week and closes next Friday at 5pm. The complete bracket can be seen here.
#3 Mary Ann's
Even without the #1 seed Mary Ann's predictably had the highest percentage of votes of any bar matchup in the tournament. For our review today, we look to BCI's own BCRaj:
"The ultimate BC bar where bartenders seem to never leave. It's the BC version of Cheers. It's a travesty that they didn't get the number 1 seed, but here's the rundown: despite the rumors that they water down the beer, the men's bathroom is not really equipped for a #2, and that questionable things may have been done to the basketballs in the Pop-A-Shot ... I don't think you can find a single bar with a higher percentage of Boston College Eagles day in and day out. Remember you are never too old to go to MaryAnn's."
#6 Union Street
In one of the closer matchups of the tournament, Union St. eeked out a win against Irish Pub Belgian Beer Garden The Publick House. To recap her experience at Union St. here is Joanna, BC Class of 2005:
"I believe this was the first place I ever went as a BC student and last for years later. This is also true for my sister, also a BC graduate. Union St. is a great place to take your parents...or should I say they take you, because let's face it college kids can't afford to do this. The food is definitely the best part about Union St, but you can always get a good drink here as well. You can always find your standard beers on tap or in a bottle, or a featured cocktail. This is a great Parents' weekend stop because who wouldn't want a good meal, especially when your parents are footing the bill, and honestly who would want to take their parents to Mary Ann's? Located in Newton Centre this place is a refreshing alternative to your typical bar."
Ultimate Boston College Bar Tournament: (1) Roggies Vs. (9) Joshua Tree
Welcome back to the BC Interruption Ultimate Boston College Bar Tournament. For our next quarterfinal matchup, we have a 1 vs 9 matchup in Roggies vs. Joshua Tree. Voting will last for a week. The complete bracket can be seen here.
**The Harry's Bar and Grille/White Horse Matchup is back up and running. The poll was fixed, and voting has been extended until Tuesday at 5pm.
Roggies crushed Who's On First in the first round of the competition, taking in a staggering 72 percent. Gameday pricing did not keep fans away from voting in droves for this heavy hitter. Reader Joanna, Class of 2005 gives her review
Favorite memory from Roggie's: Going to happy hour immediately after finishing my Senior thesis. Enough said. The wings are fabulous and cheap. You can't go wrong whether you pick buffalo or teriyaki. Roggie's even has a downstairs in the evenings. It can get a little sketchy, but not the bad kind, more the funny college story sketchy. And let's be honest, proximity is a huge selling point for this place. You can stager home or opt for the drunken late night BC bus experience. Whether it's the beer buckets, nachos, or always knowing you'll run into someone you know, as a BC student you'll always keep coming back to Roggie's. I know I do.
The bar formely known as Tonic pulled off the first upset of the tournament knocking off the beer behemoth Big City in the first round. Could Cityside's sister bar pull off another upset this week? They did receive more total votes in the first round than Roggies. To review JT, let's turn to BC fan and former A-B resident @jennycupcakes1:
"I used to frequent Joshua Tree when I lived on Allston Street and they still had their half price menu. You couldn't go wrong with everything on the menu half price after work if you buy a drink.
Buffalo Chicken nachos have to be the best invention EVER. I had multiple occasions at the bar watching football with my friends, where I couldn't make a decision between wings and nachos. Combining them is GENIUS! For this alone I do still venture out to Joshua Tree every now and then. That and the deep friend peanut butter cups which are heaven. Both are best split with a friend because its just too much food for one person alone, unless, of course, you are a professional eater.
Don't arrive too late or you'll fight with the college bar night crowds that start arriving after 8pm. I like to go during normal dinner hours. I've never gone here during a major sporting event so it might get crowded then as well. Oh and take the T to this location because parking on that section of Comm Ave is impossible and who wants to pay to valet park?"
