The Basketball Talent Drain

I know players come and go, and this might be a product of Skinner looking for the next "diamond in the rough," but has any Division I program lost more talent over the last 10 years that BC?

Since I was a freshman, 53 players have been on the BC roster. Eighteen of them have either transferred or been dismissed. That's a little under 34 percent of the roster over the past 10 years. Granted not of all of these players were significant losses, but I still think the 34 percent number is significant.

Check out the list of players who have left the BC hoops program over the last 10 years.

Dismissed from Team

Andrew Bryant

Akida McLain

Sean Williams

Alternative to Tournament Expansion: The Division I Split

Last week, I took a look at what this year's tournament might look like with an expanded 96-team field. Here's a different take on the idea of tournament expansion.

Sure, some may say that Bob Huggins has had a tumultuous career as a head basketball coach. But when it comes to the notion of NCAA Tournament expansion, have truer words ever been spoken by the West Virginia head coach?

"We ought to do what football does and go to a Division I-A and I-AA ...

That's what they have to do in football. You have to make a commitment to have a football program. It's attendance and facilities and so forth. If we did that, instead of having 347 teams, we'd maybe have 110 or 150. It makes it so much more manageable, but you could still play those people like football does, but they just can't be in your tournament."

Now here is an idea I can get behind.

This idea seems to solve any number of issues facing the NCAA in their proposed tournament expansion. For one, it keeps more of the money in the hands of the programs that, well, earned that money. Second, if you leave the tournament the way it is at 65 teams (or even better yet, scale it back down to 64 teams - it's purest form), this immediately strengthens the competitiveness of even the first round, #1 vs. #16 and #2 vs. #15 games. In addition, you can effectively kill off the NIT, CBI, CIT and other meaningless tournaments by hosting two, 64-team NCAA Tournaments, one for each level. We'll call them Division I-A and I-AA. In the recent wave of "everyone deserves a trophy" mentality, you also end up with one more program that can claim that year's National Championship in Division I-AA.

The only question now is what conferences and programs make the cut. I would propose that Division I-A consist of the following conferences: the Big 12, Atlantic Coast, Big East, Big Ten, Southeastern, Pac 10, Atlantic 10, Mountain West, Missouri Valley, Conference USA, Western Athletic, West Coast, Horizon, MAC and Colonial, for a total of 169 teams. That leaves Division I-AA with 178. There is a bit of a problem with leaving the Sun Belt behind, given that they are a Division I-A football conference, but they really haven't proven to be competitive in hoops.

Here is a version of bracketology that includes only the 169 teams from our new Division I-A. Let's take a look at how this year's tournament might look under the Huggins Plan:

MIDWEST REGION

(1) Kansas vs. (16) Kent State
(8) California vs. (9) UTEP

(5) Xavier vs. (12) Mississippi
(4) Wisconsin vs. (13) Connecticut

State, Portland

By Conference: Big East (13), Atlantic Coast (8), Big 12 (7), Big Ten (6), SEC (6), Atlantic 10 (5), Mountain West (4), Conference USA (3), Pac 10 (3), Colonial (2), Missouri Valley (2), West Coast (2), Horizon (1), MAC (1)

Again, this looks must more promising. For one thing, we've done away with the meaningless play-in game that makes the 64th and 65th best teams feel good for saying they've made the NCAA Tournament but ultimately has no bearing on the competitive outcome of the tournament. We've also suddenly boosted the competitiveness of even the most boring of tournament games in the current format.

Syracuse can't exactly be happy to have drawn VCU in the first round in the #1 vs. #16 matchup. An otherwise dull #2 vs. #15 matchup suddenly becomes must-watch basketball with matchups like Villanova-Wichita State, West Virginia-URI, Kansas State-Cincinnati and Purdue-North Carolina.

Under this proposal, I think you'd find the opening round games more entertaining and see many more upsets that we currently get. A #1 would undoubtedly fall to a #16 at some point under this format.

Of course, this plan isn't without its drawbacks. Given the current projected NCAA tournament field, this format doesn't include Siena, Cornell and Murray State, all teams that may have made a 64-team field as an at-large. But would we ultimately miss these teams? Or would programs like Siena, Cornell and Murray State be better served playing their way through a Division I-AA field of 64 and winning a National Championship, a la the success that Appalachian State has had in college football's second division. I'll leave that to you.

Projecting the 2010 ACC-Big Ten Challenge

With Wake Forest's 70-65 win over Clemson, and Michigan State's dismantling of Michigan, the ACC and Big Ten hoops regular seasons have come to an end. This, of course, can only mean one thing: we can begin speculating on 2010 ACC-Big Ten Challenge matchups.

I don't know about you but I'm more than eager to turn the page on this year's college basketball season.

Here is the order of finish for teams in the ACC and the Big Ten, with likely pairings:

Duke (13-3) vs. Ohio State (14-4)

Maryland vs. Purdue (14-4)

Florida State (10-6) vs. Michigan State (14-4)

Virginia Tech (10-6) vs. Wisconsin (13-5)

Wake Forest (9-7) vs. Illinois (10-8)

Clemson (9-7) vs. Minnesota (9-9)

Georgia Tech (7-9) vs. Northwestern (7-11)

Boston College (6-10) vs. Michigan (7-11)

Virginia (5-11) vs. Iowa (4-14)

North Carolina (5-11) vs. Indiana (4-14)

N.C. State (5-11) vs. Penn State (3-15)

So it looks like the Eagles and Wolverines again in 2010. Is there some sort of rematch rule? BC and Michigan will be the only rematch of teams that squared off in the 2009 ACC-Big Ten Challenge. In addition, BC has participated in 4 of these events and have faced the Wolverines in two of these Challenges. This sets up to be the Eagles and Wolverines' third meeting in the event in the last five years.

The other mildly intriguing matchup is North Carolina vs. Indiana. Two programs steeped in college hoops tradition who've both had forgettable 2009-2010 campaigns.

As the Hurricanes finished last in the ACC regular season standings, they will be left out of next year's party. To fill the hole in their schedule, the Canes will likely schedule Florida Gulf Coast and play in front of ~1,000 fans at the BankUnited Center. Either that, or Miami will try to preempt Big Ten expansion by scheduling Rutgers on or around the first week of December.

96-Team Bracketology: Would BC Make an Expanded Tournament Field?

Much of the talk surrounding this year's NCAA Tournament revolves around the idea of tournament expansion from 65 to 96 teams. We all know that BC isn't making this year's tournament as an at-large, and their only hope of Dancing is by earning the ACC Tournament Championship automatic berth.

While BC won't receive an at-large bid in a field of 65, would they make a field of 96?

The short answer is yes. No wonder Al Skinner has come down in favor of tournament expansion ...

Using the latest version of SB Nation's bracketology as a starting point, we constructed a 96-team bracket .... and BC is in the field of 96. BC would receive a 16 seed and play in the #16 vs. #17 matchup against St. John's. This, of course, is a realistic scenario as the Tournament selection committee loves to goad BC by pairing the Eagles with old Big East conference foes.

The winner of the #16 vs. #17 game then get their ass handed to them by #1 Kentucky.

Here's a closer look at what a 96-team tournament field would look like. (Caution: if you were previously in favor of an expanded, 96-team tournament field, read on at your own peril).

Spring Fever: BC Spring Practices

At Boston College last spring there were questions about stability within the program. Coach Jagodzinski had been fired only two months before, and a career assistant subsequently headed the Boston College program.

With the whirlwind surrounding the coaching situation as well as an offensive quarterback situation (Only four games of starting experience at the college level between three candidates) yet to subside, but Boston College and new head coach Frank Spaziani felt that there was a least one constant in their football program; their defense.

As stars like Mike McLaughlin (Achilles) and Mark Herzlich (Cancer) started to fall out of starting positions, chaos ensued in and around Alumni Stadium.

2009 ended for the Eagles with an eight-win season. The fall was filled with multiple cases of surprising underclassmen who stepped into key leadership roles during the 2009 campaign. The Eagles head into 2010 with eight returning starters on both sides of the ball, and look to build off of what many analysts call a comeback season for the ages.

By March 15, the Eagles will begin their 2010 spring practices. As many would expect, the spotlight is on Mark Herzlich.

Herzlich is coming back from a seemingly impossible journey from a cancer patient, to a cancer survivor. If he is able to return to the form he possessed in 2008, the Eagles should have high expectations once again for their defense. Herzlich provides strength to every player on Boston College and has given them motivation to work as hard as he has worked for the past year.

Ambition and courage are just two characteristics Herzlich brings to the table, and as he hopes, out onto the field. If that occurs, Herzlich’s starting position at linebacker is all but secure.

But for many other players vying for a starting spot on the team, the battle has only just begun. Here are some position battles that I believe will make some waves with BC coaches and fans alike.

Quarterback: Dave Shinskie vs. Chase Rettig

The battle of the 26-year-old sophomore vs. the 18-year-old freshman. Landing the starting job after a strong performance against Wake Forest last year, Dave Shinskie had a season similar to the Superman rollercoaster at Six Flags.

Shinskie and the Eagles have soared in great performances against Florida State and Central Michigan, but had their wings clipped in games against Clemson and USC. The USC game left a bad taste in a BC fan’s mouth, and many are looking for change.

That change could very well come in the form of freshman Chase Rettig. Arriving here in January and having a great showing at the Under Armour All-American game catapulted Rettig from a contender to a favorite for the job as field general.

Strong Safety: Okechukwu Okoroha vs. Jim Noel

In the 2009 season, BC had a rock in their secondary named Marcellus Bowman. Marcellus delivered mind-blowing hits every single Saturday (including one on Kent State’s Eugene Jarvis). Bowman has now graduated, and it is time for another safety to step up in his place.

Jim Noel will be a true sophomore next season and received more playing time than Okoroha did. With Noel’s lanky yet athletic 6’5" frame, I believe he has the upper hand on Okoroha at this point.

Okechukwu did come to the Heights with what many thought to be a huge ceiling. It will be very interesting to see how these common interest stories and position battles shake out for the next few weeks.

N.C. State-Duke Blue Wolfpack Demons Conspire to Win ACC Football (Satire)

Since BC joined the ACC, N.C. State hasn't been very good at football. Neither has Duke. They say that misery loves company. I guess that's the logical jump that has to be made to explain this curious spring football development in the ACC:

N.C. State football coach Tom O'Brien and his staff observed Duke's spring practice on Monday morning.

Duke coach David Cutcliffe said that since the teams do not face each other for five seasons that they could welcome in the State staff.

"It's not often that you get to watch another team's practice," Cutcliffe said. "So we agreed to swap out a day to watch each other work. That's really all it was, end of story."

Cutcliffe, who enters his third season at Duke, said his staff will attend an N.C. State practice when they start this spring.

Cutcliffe and O'Brien would have you believe this is no big deal. But make no mistake about this move. This is a blatant attempt by both programs to gain a competitive advantage by pooling coaching brainpower to win their way into the 2010 ACC Football Championship.

O'Brien is likely trying to learn how exactly Cutcliffe's Blue Devils defeated Maryland, Virginia and his own team last year (the only ACC programs that Duke has defeated over the last 5 seasons). O'Brien is looking for any advantage possible in hopes of taking down Maryland in this coming season's regular season finale. On the other hand, Cutcliffe is trying to find ways to avoid a four game losing streak in the ACC to the likes of Wake Forest, Duke, Boston College and Florida State, as O'Brien's Wolfpack did last year.

I guess both O'Brien and Cutcliffe have thrown in the towel on next season. They both have no hope of facing one another in the 2010 ACC Football Championship Game in Charlotte? Try to hold back your laughter.

It is also reported, yet unconfirmed, that Frank Spaziani has scheduled time with the Montana State coaching staff of the Big Sky Conference to learn how exactly the Bobcats took down the Weber State Wildcats last season. This move will likely gain approval from both the ACC and the Big Sky Conference as BC and Montana State are scheduled to face one another, well, never.

ACC Basketball Home/Road Splits

You are hearing more and more statements like "it's hard to win on the road in the ACC." On the surface, that statement seems to make sense, but just how pronounced is home court advantage in the ACC this season?

Here is a look at the home/road split of ACC wins and losses. The trend isn't surprising. What is surprising is the magnitude of the home court advantage. Road teams are a paltry 22-56 (.286). Contrast that with home teams record of 55-22 (.714).

The biggest offender on the road is Miami, who are the proud owners of an 0-7 mark with one road game to go. At home, Maryland leads the way with a 7-0 home record while three other programs check in with 6-0 records (Duke, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech).

Miles attends Long Beach High School in New Jersey, and thrives at both football and track. Coming into his senior season, Miles has created an astounding amount of buzz because of his great junior film, which numerous D-1 programs have gotten a hold of.

I had the privilege of watching his tape. I was taken aback at his ability to make a play out of nothing. Quentin Gause, who I evaluated prior to Miles, uses more of a brute type strength to get past defenders. Miles uses his shiftiness and fluent cutbacks to break through the defense.

His coaches at Long Beach use Miles at the quarterback position because every play starts with him. At first, I underestimated his throwing credentials but I quickly ate my words when I saw the first pass. He possesses a decent arm but uses his speed well while throwing. His passes don’t have much zip but he still has great accuracy with the majority of his throws.

With Shuler's type of speed and playmaking ability, there was no doubt the LBHS coaches would keep his talents restricted to just passing plays. For about 70% of the plays on his tape, Miles was running out of the backfield instead of passing from it.

This proved to be a wise decision because Shuler is as elusive as they come. As he juked and sliced every defender he faced, it became apparent that even the best defenses in the league could only hope to contain him. To add to his lateral quickness, Shuler is also the proud owner of a (4.2) 40 time.

Verdict: With countless offers coming in for Shuler, he will have to start to narrow down his college choices. After attending many junior days already, coaches have had a chance to woo him even before an official visit may be made by the star junior. In the upcoming months, Shuler will have to make some important decisions, but I don’t doubt they’ll be the right ones for him.

In recruiting data around the Internet, Quentin Gause is labeled as an athlete. Athlete by definition is "a person possessing the natural or acquired traits or talents." Because of these talents, he is not subjected to one single position on the Bishop Kearney football team. Instead, he plays running back, wide receiver, linebacker and kick returner. Quentin has all the right tools to be great at each of these positions.

Below is an analysis of how he stacks up for each of these positions.

Running Back. Although at times it seemed he looked a little awkward running with the ball from the backfield, Gause still has the speed and monstrous strength to negate any tendencies that may have overlapped from other positions. Quentin’s speed is unrivaled out of the backfield in many of his runs. On film, he doesn’t seem overwhelmingly fast. But, do not be fooled by his long stride and upright stance, he is the real deal in terms of running the ball.

Wide Receiver. The discomfort that Gause seem to have running the football that I had made a note of during his running back portion of the film seems to disappear when looking at him catching the ball. Catching routes 20+ yards downfield is extremely impressive, but his screen plays absolutely amaze me. Screens that seem to be dead at the line of scrimmage are quickly revived once the ball is shoveled to Gause. His vision downfield is exceptional during these plays as well.

Linebacker. Playing offensive positions such as running back and wide receiver greatly help a defensive player. The same is true for Gause, who has the unique ability to scan the beginning of an opposing teams play and explode toward the ball. If Quentin ever misses a read (rarely happens) he has that same speed used on the offensive side of the ball to make up ground that usually leads to some rattling hits set on the opposition.

Kick Return. Every talent Quentin Gause possesses is used to the maximum when returning kicks. He uses his speed to blow past defenders, brute strength to topple defenders and has the vision up field to find that perfect seam to make a big play.

Verdict: Quentin Gause is easily one of the best overall athletes in the 2011 class. If Bishop Kearney needs him on almost every single down of their games, I know for a fact that he will find his place with a top-tier Division I program. It will be interesting to see what position he plans on playing in college and what the coaches recruiting him want Gause to play. This determination could play a huge factor into the direction of his commitment. You can never go wrong with a non-stop playmaker like Quentin Gause in your program.

Grade: A-

BC's Bad Boys

Building on the excellent work of D1scoure’s Patrick Stevens, who looked into fouls per player in the ACC, I wanted to get a sense of how the Eagles stacked up in terms of committing personal fouls this season.

Below is a list of Eagles who have averaged at least 15 minutes per game this year and a measure of their fouls on a per-40 minute basis. This boots Dunn (5.80 fouls/40 min), Ravenel (9.32), Rehnquist (3.64) and Mosakowski (8.00) from the below list.

Of course, this measure isn’t perfect, but is a better way of leveling the playing field in terms of personal fouls.

Obviously the first thing that jumps out at you is that Josh Southern is averaging over 6 fouls per game if he played all 40 minutes. Basically, he is averaging fouling out of every game. Heck, he wouldn't even last the full 48 minutes and 6 fouls allotted in an NBA game. This combined with Dunn's high average (5.80) and clearly our big men are struggling to guard taller, more athletic centers and forwards.

Elmore is committing his fair share of fouls as well. He plays with a good deal of intensity and is sometimes prone to picking up fouls in bunches, like in the Wake Forest game, where he picked up 2 quick fouls on mismatches against Wake's big men.

The other thing that stands out to me is Biko Paris' number. 1.96 fouls per 40 minutes. What's going on here? Maybe it's his decreased minutes over the last few games, or him considering defense optional, or the refs swallowing the whistle when Biko is on defense, or just sound defense (a stretch? probably). Whatever the case may be, Biko isn't committing a lot of fouls. In only one game this season, he got to 4 fouls (in 15 minutes at Wake Forest) and reached the 3 foul mark in only 3 other games. If you have any theories, let me know.

Conference Realignment: What do you think about this scenario?

Conference expansions has been a hot topic as of late and I was reading somewhere that suggested the expansion could turn into conference realignments. This is how the ACC looked from a football standpoint:

ACC North

ACC South

Boston College

Clemson

Maryland

Duke

Pittsburgh

Florida State

Rutgers

Georgia Tech

Syracuse

Miami

Virginia

North Carolina

Virginia Tech

N.C. State

West Virginia

Wake Forest

If this took place I guess the scheduling would consist of everyone playing each other in their division then either rotating or having a rival to face in the opposing side. I personally don't like the idea of the whole "mega-conference" thing and would rather keep a 12-team conference but both have their pros and cons. I just wanted to know what you guys think about it.

R.I.P. EA Sports NCAA Basketball Series

I tend to consider myself a casual gamer. I don't really get into games like Call of Duty, Ninja Assassin or Halo. But I do enjoy me some EA Sports games, especially games like Madden, NCAA Football and NCAA Basketball. That's why I found this news particularly disheartening:

Looking over the list of list of Electronic Arts titles planned for release during the next fiscal year, one sports franchise is notably absent. Today EA Sports senior director of communications David Tinson confirmed that NCAA Basketball has fouled out of the lineup. "We do not have an NCAA Basketball game in development at this time, and we’re currently reviewing the future of our NCAA Basketball business," he said. "This was a difficult decision, but we remain a committed partner to the NCAA and its member institutions."

With 2K Sports dropping their college basketball game, EA's decision to drop the NCAA Basketball series leaves no video game on the market for the college basketball fan. Sure, the gameplay for EA's NCAA Basketball was nowhere even close to the gameplay for a title like NBA Live. I never understood why though. If you are going to program all sorts of nifty moves and dunks for the NBA, why not just port that gameplay over to your NCAA title? I guess EA no longer wanted to invest in reprogramming the game when the NCAA tournament moves to 96 teams.

Still, this is sad news for the NCAA basketball, video game junkie. I guess my xBox 360 copy of NCAA March Madness 08 will become something of a collector's item. I'll be stuck beating the 2008 version of the Harvard Crimson by 45 (virtual payback) and shooting way too many 3s with #32 for the Eagles; a player that looks remarkably similar to Johnny Oates but isn't really Johnny Oates (lest I get in trouble with the NCAA higher ups).

More on Boston College signee Shakim Phillips

Ed note: Promoting story to the front page.

Shakim Phillips
Position: Wide Receiver
Hometown: Wayne, NJ
High School: DePaul Catholic
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 191 lbs.

Early Enrolled: No

Rivals.com position rank: 21
Scout.com position rank: 29
Stars: 4* (Rivals) / 3* (Scout)

The Buzz:

Coming into the 2009 season, the Boston College Eagles were undergoing coaching changes while trying to deal with internal team losses.

Sophomore quarterback Dominique Davis had transferred out of Boston College due to grades and star linebackers were not projected to have a chance playing in 2009. The coaching staff scrambled to find another quarterback to add to the 2009 recruiting class.

They found that quarterback in 25 year old, ex minor league baseball player, Dave Shinskie. While many believed that he was far too displaced from the game, others thought he had all the tools to be successful for his whole career at the heights. Would Shinskie be a prominent ACC quarterback for years to come for the Eagles? Only time could tell.

Arguably the best thing Shinskie had going for him was BC’s experienced and talented wide receiving corps. With four seniors, including the much hyped Rich Gunnell, it was believed that Shinskie would receive as much help as he needed coming into the season.

The 2009 season came and went, and the Eagles went 8-5, including an Emerald Bowl loss to the USC Trojans. While many observers viewed their record as a success, the team as a whole was not satisfied with the final result.

Dave Shinskie had a mediocre season to most. He was known to use Gunnell as a crutch during many games while many other receivers seemed invisible on the field.

Coming into the offseason this was an immediate concern for Coach Spaziani because Rich Gunnell was graduating. While Colin Larmond Jr. had a breakout sophomore year and is projected to be a great deep threat this season, the depth and incoming talent on the roster was still an issue.

Enter Shakim Phillips. Once considered a long shot for the Eagles because of so many other offers from prominent programs (20 to count), he committed to the program in early September because of what he put as “a great balance of football tradition and education."

For Shakim, the stress had finally been lifted from trying to make a final decision of where to play football. He was an Eagle. After finishing his high school career at DePaul Catholic School in New Jersey where they went 7-3 which included a playoff run, he knew he needed to get ready for ACC football. He believed that his speed was the biggest void he needed to fill before coming to Chestnut Hill.

All off season he worked specifically on agility and speed drills in order to become a major threat on the team next year. While trying to stay away from directly recruiting players to join him up at BC, Shakim has become familiar with many incoming recruits as well as players currently on the roster.

Shakim said that when he met Colin Larmond Jr. on his official visit, the two hit it off immediately. They have spoken since then and Shakim said they have built a good friendship.

As for incoming freshmen, Shakim has become most familiar with C.J. Jones from Delaware who will vie for a spot on the Eagles secondary this year. Phillips said that he continues to remind C.J. which of the two was selected to play in the Army All-American game in San Antonio. While he joked about it often, Shakim said that it was “a privilege and an honor to be selected to play in this prestigious game.”

In San Antonio, he was able to work with great coaches as well as quarterback talent he was not usually accustomed to. He very well may be able to retain that sensation when he hits the field as an Eagle next year because prominent California product Chase Rettig is in the 2010 class as well.

As expected by any wide receiver, Shakim is extremely happy to have a quarterback with as much potential as Chase Rettig come to BC as well. As Shakim put it, “It’s great to have that type of player to put your faith into as a receiver. It just makes everything on the field easier for us [receivers]” With Chase already beginning his career at Boston College, Shakim has to wait until graduation before he can officially practice for the Eagles.

He’s counting down the days to National Signing day so he can finally put on his BC hat and end all stress accumulated his senior year. While he is still debatable whether or not BC’s 2010 class will reach its full potential, one thing definitely is for certain; Shakim Phillips is one player who won’t allow his talent and his promising future at Boston College to go to waste.

As Phillips stated “The doubters can speculate all they want, but at the end of the day, it’s going to be my work and passion for the game that will get me to where I want to be.” A determined player for a determined program.

Boston College's 2010 Recruiting Wrapup

Ed note: Promoting story to the front page. Feel free to add your comments below.

After a roller coaster 2009 season, Boston College coach Frank Spaziani has his first full recruiting class under his belt. Unlike last year, there were not too many gaping holes to fill this year.

Last year, Luke Keuchly (Freshman All-American) was pressed into action because of injuries to all three starting linebackers, although this seemed to work out extremely well as Keuchly went on to have the second most tackles in all of college football.

Spaziani knew that this type of luck couldn’t last forever, and the coaching staff started establishing their 2010 class. Their first commitment of this class ultimately became their highest-ranked player.

Kevin Pierre-Louis is from The King & Low Heywood Thomas School in Connecticut and first committed to BC under the Jeff Jagodzinski regime, but withdrew that commitment after Jagodzinski was fired last January. He soon recommitted to Boston College after building a great relationship with the new coaching staff. Along with Pierre-Louis, the Eagles received pledges from other great defensive players like Steele Divitto, Dominic Appiah, and C.J. Jones.

Pierre-Louis and Divitto received a great amount of fanfare coming to the Heights, but we must not forget about some great talent on offense. Having two different starters in the 2009 season, the quarterback situation looked bleak for the Eagles.

In July of 2009, Chase Rettig of San Clemente, California committed to Boston College. Rettig is known to have exceptional velocity when he releases the ball, but still has to try and hone his accuracy in order to vie for the starting slot come September.

Another great offensive playmaker the Eagles were able to sign was Shakim Phillips of New Jersey.

After receiving nearly 20 offers from college programs, it was apparent that Shakim had some sorting out to do. It actually came as a surprise to many BC fans that Shakim displayed his loyalty to the Eagles.

Shakim played special teams and wide receiver at DePaul Catholic HS and was a playmaking threat every time he touched the ball. For Eagle fans hoping to see the likes of Matt Ryan and a new breed of wideouts at Alumni Stadium, they may very well get their wish as soon as next year.

Without any National Signing Day publicity, like many other top tier programs had, Boston College quietly put away Spaziani’s first class as a head coach. The Eagles did receive some great talent to fill necessary holes for next year, but they did fail to sign some great players they had atop their board.

That being said, only losing three starters on both sides of the ball this past year will be a great way to slowly get these new recruits in the process. This 2010 class doesn’t feel the same type of urgency that the 2009 class felt a year earlier, and I am confident that fans of Boston College hope that will translate to success immediately, as well as a few years down the road.

Headliner: Chase Rettig, QB

Sleeper: Josh Bordner, QB/LB

Grade: B+

Sean Williams and the Downfall of BC Hoops

Ed note: Promoting story to the front page. Feel free to add your comments below.

It was three years ago on Jan. 18 when Boston College's superstar center was dismissed from school.

Today we take time to remember his greatness and continue to reminisce about BC hoops' absence three years later.

Former Boston College center Sean Williams led the team in blocked shots each of his first two seasons; set a school single-season record with 63 blocked shots in 2004-05; blocked 55 shots in 2005-06 (third on the school's single-season list, a record that he would shatter his junior year); and was averaging five blocked shots per game, including 13 against Duquesne and 12 against Providence, during the 2006-07 season.

Williams was such a force in the paint that he was dubbed Shot Block Extraordinaire, and fan sections were known as Williams’ Block Party.

Sean Williams wasn’t a heralded recruit out of high school, but he liked BC more than Texas. Williams was an outstanding athlete and a student, scoring highly on his SATs.

On the court, Williams averaged 16 points, 10 rebounds, and six blocked shots per game for Mansfield HS. Despite his success, Williams didn’t begin paying organized basketball until he was 15. His senior year, he was named top newcomer of the district.

Williams arrived at Boston College in hopes of making an immediate impact. He played in 27 games, including all 16 conference contests. He averaged 4.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.3 blocked shots per game, averaging 4.1 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 blocked shots per game in league contests. He earned Big East All-Rookie Team honors.

He received Big East Rookie of the Week honors (Jan. 10) for his efforts against Connecticut and Providence, where he scored 24 points to go along with 16 rebounds and six blocks.

Williams scored in double figures in just two games and had just one double-digit rebound game. He recorded one double-double where he totaled 16 points and 10 rebounds (seven at the offensive end)—both career highs—in a home win over Providence (Jan. 8, 2005), shooting 7-for-7 from the field.

Williams finished the year ranked among Big East leaders (conference games only) in blocked shots (third, 2.25/game). He led or tied for the team lead in blocked shots 20 times.

Some of his best games as a freshman included a contest against Providence when he blocked eight shots, tallied four points, and grabbed two rebounds in 27 minutes of action. At UCLA he registered six blocked shots, two points, two rebounds, and two steals in the John R. Wooden Classic in Anaheim, Calif. (Dec. 5, 2004). He posted six points, five blocked shots, and four rebounds in a home win over Seton Hall (Feb. 23, 2005).

Williams started his career with a seven-point, seven-rebound, four-blocked shot outing against Maine (Nov. 19, 2004). He totaled eight points, six rebounds, and three blocked shots in 26 minutes of action in his Big East debut at Connecticut (Jan. 5, 2005).

In the NCAA tournament he averaged 8.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.5 blocked shots per game in the team's two contests in Cleveland, Ohio, notching 11 points and seven rebounds in a first-round win over Penn (Mar. 17, 2005).

Despite his success as a freshman, Williams wasn’t yet the dominating force that he would become. He had been outside the spotlight on Craig Smith, Sean Marshall, and Jared Dudley.

In his sophomore year, Williams wasn’t outstanding, but he didn’t come to life until postseason play. It was Boston College’s first year in the ACC. He played in 27 games, including 15 ACC contests. He averaged 3.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.0 blocked shots per game—2.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.8 blocked shots per game in league contests.

Williams scored in double figures just once but ranked among ACC leaders (conference games only) in blocked shots (third, 1.80/game). He led or tied for the team lead in blocked shots 21 times.

He had one of his best games of the season when he registered seven points, seven rebounds, and a career-high nine blocked shots in a career-high 35 minutes of action in the team's double-overtime win at NC State (Feb. 25, 2006). In that game he swatted two shots in the first half, four in the second half, one in the first overtime, and two in the second overtime.

He totaled 13 points, five rebounds, two blocked shots, and two steals in a win at Holy Cross (Jan. 17, 2006).

In the ACC Tournament he averaged 3.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.0 blocked shots per game in the Eagles' three contests; he blocked two shots in each of the three games.

In the NCAA Tournament he averaged 3.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.0 blocked shots per game in the team's three contests. Perhaps one of Williams’ more memorable moments wearing a BC uniform was in the triple OT first round game against Pacific.

Williams swatted five shots in a second-round win over Montana (in Salt Lake City), and he posted seven points, seven rebounds, and three blocked shots against Villanova in the regional semifinals (in Minneapolis), one of which was the game-saving block at the time (fast-forward to six minutes into the video to see the block).

That block sent the game to overtime, where Villanova would score on a defensive letdown by Sean Marshall to give them the-one point advantage. BC held a 16-point lead after starting the game on a 9-0 run. With 40 seconds remaining in the OT and BC down 58-55, Jared Dudley made a layup on the block (it should’ve been an and one, along with the game-tying three in regulation).

BC would foul Kyle Lowry, and he missed the free throw. BC went down the court and got the ball their go-to guy Craig Smith, who put in the go-ahead basket. Williams blocked Villanova’s shot next out of bounds, and the Wildcats had no timeouts. As a result BC wasn’t able to set their defense, and Will Sheridan ran down the lane and scored on a goaltending call.

Louis Hinnant got a decent look from well beyond the arc, but his shot was short. Since then, Villanova has shot up on a national stage, while BC has taken a few steps back. Regardless of what happened in this one, BC was still returning Dudley, Williams, Smith, Marshall, and Tyrese Rice the next year.

A link to the ending of the Boston College-Villanova game from the 2006 Sweet 16 can be found here.

The 2006-07 season began with high hopes for the Eagles. A rocky start featured losses to Vermont (without Williams), Providence (after Williams returned), and Duquesne (without Dudley), but a 5-0 start in ACC play showed that the Eagles had gotten their footing. Williams played in just 15 games for the Eagles that season.

In those 15 games, Williams nearly doubled his minutes per game and nearly tripled his shot attempts per game. Overall he averaged 12 points per game, seven rebounds per game, and an impressive five blocks per game.

Standout performances against Providence (10 rebounds and 12 blocks), Maryland (10 points, 11 rebounds, and seven blocks), Kansas (19 points, 15 rebounds, and seven blocks), and Duquesne (19 points, 10 rebounds, and 13 blocks) were just a few of the many outstanding games for Williams.

In Williams’ last game for BC, he had 10 points, six rebounds, and three blocks in a win over Miami. The win vaulted BC to a 5-0 start in ACC play. Williams shattered his previous BC single-season record in just 15 games, recording a total of 75 blocks. Williams owned the previous record of 63 his freshman year in 27 games.

On Jan. 18, 2007, BC's NCAA Tournament and ACC Championship hopes took a serious blow when junior forwards Akida McLain and Sean Williams were dismissed from school. Boston College has yet to release further information on the expulsions since the incident occurred.

The two each had two other suspensions prior to being dismissed. Williams was once suspended for marijuana possession, and McLain was involved in a counterfeiting scheme. Williams was the clear favorite for national defensive player of the year.

Prior to his dismissal Williams wasn’t allowed to attend classes at BC in the fall, so he stayed home and took some lessons from former NBA player John Lucas, who has a history of helping players with substance abuse problems.

With Williams being kicked out of school, his draft stock went down some. For McLain his career was all but over considering he wasn’t an NBA prospect.

Williams was a key to this team. His numbers early on in his career and offensive numbers overall aren’t that impressive, but the shot blocks and inside presence took BC to another level. He allowed Dudley to gamble a little bit more on the defensive end because he had Williams behind him. John Oates, Shamari Spears, and Tyrelle Blair filled in for Williams, but they weren’t able to replace what he had brought to the table.

Here is a look at some of Williams’ highlights at BC.

BC finished off the season going 5-6 in their remaining ACC games to go along with a second round exit of the NCAA tournament. BC had gone from Final Four/ACC Champion hopeful to a middle of the pack ACC team. The ending of the season was a sour one for four-year starters Jared Dudley and Sean Marshall, who had high expectations for their final year at the helm.

Williams got off a lot easier than BC. He would be drafted 17th overall by the New Jersey Nets in the 2007 NBA draft. He would win the starting role after a few games into the season. Williams would be placed back on the bench after a few players returned from injury, and when he was moved back to the bench, his season turned sour quickly.

In February of 2008, Williams was arrested on the BC campus. He was charged with a misdemeanor for violating restraining orders. Williams was hoping to attend the game against Duke that night.

Williams had been on good behavior while playing for the Nets, but when he was bumped down to the NBDL, he was tossed out of a few games, and the Colorado 14ers asked the Nets to recall him. Williams returned to the Nets but wasn’t himself. The Nets tried to trade him, but there were no buyers.

Just two weeks ago, on Jan. 11, 2010, Williams was released by the Nets. There is no news on what the future holds for Williams.

Here is a highlight clip of Williams' time spent in the NBA.

Meanwhile, Williams’ former teammates Jared Dudley and Craig Smith are playing limited roles for their respective teams. Both are averaging around 10 points per game. Other players, such as Tyrese Rice and Sean Marshall, are playing in Europe.

For BC, the Williams incident has continuously brought them down since the 2006-07 season. They would win just four ACC games the following year and fail to qualify for the NCAA tournament. BC returned somewhat to its former self when it went 9-7 in ACC play last year and qualified for the NCAA tournament, where the Eagles were ousted by USC, but they have yet to truly return to their old selves.

Since the BC basketball program fell off, the football team has really taken charge as the school’s No. 1 sport. This downfall began with the Williams and McLain expulsions, later followed by the Shamari Spears and Marquez Haynes transfers.

Here is one final look at the 2005-06 Boston College Eagles' Sweet 16 run.

The Eagles' All-Decade Hockey Team

Because everyone else is getting all decade nostalgic on us. A look at back at the decade that was Boston College athletics from children of the decade (BC's Class of 2004).

This is an attempt to rank the decade's best Eagles' ice hockey players. This considers Eagles who played on any team from 2000-2001 to 2009-2010. It gets fairly complicated when you include the seniors on the 1999-2000 teams. There was plenty of talent in that senior class (Mike Mottau, Blake Bellefeuille, Jeff Farkas) but at the end of the day, they only played 3 months of this decade so they were omitted for this exercise.

First Team All-Decade

F - Brian Gionta
F - Nathan Gerbe
F - Patrick Eaves
D - Brooks Orpik
D - Bobby Allen
G - Cory Schneider

No first team all-decade squad would be complete without two of the most dynamic BC scorers in the past 10 years. Both Brian Gionta and Nathan Gerbe had a knack for completely taking over a game. Both brought home National Championships for the Eagles. On defense, Brooks Orpik might have been the hardest hitting defender the Eagles have had the last ten years. Bobby Allen was the lynch pin of the Eagles defense that got the Eagles to four consecutive Frozen Fours from 1997-1998 to 2000-2001. In net, while Scott Clemmensen and John Muse both won National Championships, I think Schneider was slightly more dominant in net in his three years in Chestnut Hill. Schneider twice came within a goal of bringing home another Title to Boston College.

Second Team All-Decade

F - Tony Voce
F - Ben Eaves
F - Chris Collins
D - Rob Scuderi
D - J.D. Forrest
G - Scott Clemmensen

Ben Eaves and Tony Voce provided much of the firepower on offense in the years immediately after the 2000-2001 National Championship. The pair ran 1-2 in points in 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 with Voce leading the team in his senior season. Chris Collins made a strong case to win the Hobey Baker in 2005-2006, registering 34 goals and 29 assists in 42 games. On defense, I have Rob Scuderi and J.D. Forrest patrolling the blueline on the second team. And finally, in net, I'll take Scott Clemmensen. Clemmensen has a National Championship and many of the Eagles' all-time goaltending records to show for his four dominant years at BC.

Third Team All-Decade

F - Brian Boyle
F - Ryan Shannon
F - Brock Bradford
D - Andrew Alberts
D - Nick Petrecki
G - Matti Kaltianinen

Boyle lead the Eagles in scoring in 2006-2007, beating out Gerbe with 19 goals and 34 assists in 42 games. Boyle also finished second in scoring his junior year and fourth in scoring after his sophomore year. Shannon never led the team in scoring, but finished in the top 3 his sophomore, junior and senior years. Bradford might be a stretch considering he only had one great season and was hampered by injuries his junior year, but he made the most of his senior year - leading the Eagles in scoring in 2008-2009. On defense, Andrew Alberts and Nick Petrecki make the third team. And in net, I'll go with Matti Kaltianinen over John Muse. While Muse has a title, Kaltianinen really kept the Eagles momentum going this decade and successfully bridged the years between Clemmensen and Schneider.

Honorable Mention: Krys Kolanos (F), Chuck Kobasew (F), Stephen Gionta (F), Carl Sneep (D), Mike Brennan (D), John Muse (G).

Your thoughts?

NO EXCUSES!!!!

Give me a break!! Absolutely NO excuses for BC losing to lowly "John Harvard" (Ivy League) (2) years in a row!! Perhaps my "alma mater", the Crusaders of HC should rekindle its bitter rivalry; keep in mind HC brought NCAA basketball to New England many years ago until "Mr Basketball" the Cooz betrayed his "alma mater" to put BC on the map in the late 1960's. Without him BC would never gained national prominence!!!

Give me a break!! Absolutely NO excuses for the Boston College Eagles basketball team to LOSE to the lowly Johnnies of "John Harvard" (2) years in a row especially on their HOME court!!

Perhaps my "alma mater" the Crusaders of Holy Cross who actually put New England basketball on the "national scene" way back in the 1950's & 1960's should consider rekindling its old rivalry. Up until the mid 1960's when "Mr. Basketball" the "Cooz" betrayed his "alma mater" and was named head coach at BC, Chestnut Hill was never able to compete with the powers including HC!!!

It is really sad to think that the "financial condition" of the Boston College athletic program is in such "poor condition" that it cannot even afford to send its "marching band" to another "no name" bowl ("Emerald Bowl) the day after XMas to face a pitiful USC football team.

Best of luck @ Durham, NC & Chapel Hill, NC!!!

25th Anniversary of "Hail Flutie"

All Eagles fans are familiar with the infamous game-winning pass QB Doug Flutie threw against Miami, but what are those athletes up to these days? Check out this link for a brief update on the lives of players from that 1984 team like BC receiver Gerald Phelan who caught the pass and BC center Jack Bicknell, Jr., son of Eagles coach Jack Bicknell, Sr. Bet you can't guess what he's doing for a living.
