What should we even think about this season? A lot of Boston College fans had high hopes for the Eagles before the season began, with sights set even as high as making a bid to the NCAA tournament. Most of our writers weren’t that optimistic, but we did at least expect some improvement and for Earl Grant to fix some issues that had been plaguing the team during his tenure. You can read our preseason predictions here to get a better sense of what we were thinking.

The Eagles finished 19-15 with an exit in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament, and will finish the postseason with a bid to the NIT. How did this line up with your preseason expectations?

Kieran: Record-wise, I think BC performed a bit better than I expected. But on the court, I think they were who I thought they were! (Insert Dennis Green sound bite here.) QP was pretty outstanding, but the rest of the team didn’t take a big enough step forward. It really seemed like they were going to beat Virginia there at the end, but alas, it wasn’t meant to be.

Brian: I thought this may be the year BC took a big jump forward and made the tournament. They showed flashes of a tournament team throughout the season, but they could never string enough games together to make that big jump.

Curtis: This is right about where I thought they’d be! They underperformed expectations slightly in conference because they didn’t really punch above their weight against any top ACC teams. But they did win basically all of the games they were “supposed” to. And they also performed really well in their out-of-conference games, taking care of business against the bad teams (which is an improvement over last year) and even nabbing an upset of St. John’s in Brooklyn.

Why do you think BC didn’t take a big jump in the regular season, like some of us were expecting?

Kieran: Aside from Post, the rest of the starters and reserves didn’t develop as much as Earl Grant needed them to. BC desperately needed another go-to scorer after QP, and Claudell Harris was great at times. He just wasn’t as consistent BC needed him to be. Mason Madsen shot lights out at times, but again, he didn’t score consistently enough. I really do like the players on this team, but I wish they had a more explosive scorer to help Post.

Brian: I thought there were phases throughout the year where we lacked energy and had trouble taking care of the basketball. I also think the roles of the players should have been more defined to start the year. I understand that roles and playing time change throughout the season, but had these been more established, I think the team may have been better off. Post was relied upon too much, and once Harris had that bad shooting spell, we lacked a second scorer until Madsen stepped up.

Curtis: The supporting cast just didn’t develop at the rate we were expecting. Quinten Post, Claudell Harris Jr., and Jaeden Zackery were their three primary stars and generally performed at a high level, or at least met expectations, but they didn’t do so consistently. When those inconsistent performances crop up, its nice to lean on the team’s depth, but outside of a solid year from Devin McGlockton and the occasional hot streak from Mason Madsen, the rest of the roster lacked development. The team would have been better served if Madsen, Prince Aligbe, Chas Kelley, Donald Hand, or someone else stepped up to fill in some gaps, but nobody really did.

Which players really stood out to you as top performers this season?

Kieran: Quinten Post has to be the runaway favorite here. He was one of the best bigs in the ACC and I hope he excels in whatever level of basketball he plays next. Claudell Harris, Jaeden Zackery, and Devin McGlockton should also be acknowledged. And I loved watching Madsen when he was on fire from three.

Brian: The one player who really stood out to me was Devin McGlockton. At some points throughout the season, he was our most consistent player. Quinten Post was another obvious top performer. Mason Madsen also had a great second half of the season.

Curtis: Like I said, Post, Harris, and Zackery were the primary drivers to winning basketball games. I especially enjoyed watching Claudell Harris play, his game is really fun to watch and his shot creation ability is something special. He did go on cold streaks fairly often, but maybe it’s the Celtics fan in me that didn’t mind suffering through those subpar performances (Jaylen Brown, anybody?).

What was the high point of the season?

Kieran: This season didn’t feel like it had a lot of highs and lows. That said, I think overtime against Virginia in the ACC tourney might have been the high point for me. I didn’t really expect BC to have a shot in that game, so it was really fun to see them take a quality team like Virginia down to the wire.

Brian: The high point of the season was this ACC tournament run, which honestly, makes the season more frustrating. Imagine if we played with that much intensity throughout the entire season? It’s obvious Earl can get the guys excited for the postseason, but why can’t we keep that energy throughout rest of the year?

Curtis: It’s obviously got to be the ACC Tournament run. They were able to unlock everything that worked about this team: relentless defense and running the offense through a few very talented players. It was so fun to watch Earl Grant’s vision for this team finally be achieved, even if it only lasted for a few games.

What was the low point of the season?

Kieran: Getting smacked by Duke by 15 points in February, right after losing to Florida State by one point definitely was not fun.

Brian: The loss at Syracuse was a low point. The team was going through an illness, but that was where the season started to really unravel.

Curtis: The collapse towards the end of the season had things looking pretty bleak. They were 6-8 in conference with a chance to nab some wins against beatable teams down the stretch and make a push towards 20 overall wins. But they instead dropped four losses in a row, capped off by a blowout loss to Pitt despite a huge game from Quinten Post.

Do you think Earl Grant has this program on the right trajectory? What needs to change, if anything?

Kieran: Ehhhh, I am unsure. He doesn’t seem like a bad coach, but I don’t think he’s recruiting well enough to win in a premier conference. If BC was a mid-major, things might be okay, but they are still in the ACC (for now…). So if Grant can find some gems and get better talent on the court, he might just make it.

Brian: I would say the program is in a better spot now than when he took it over. With that said, he’ll need to fill Quinten Post’s shoes if he wants to continue the upward trajectory.

Curtis: I would answer a solid YES to this question, but it doesn’t come without caveats. Only a couple of players have shown serious growth under Grant’s tutelage (Post, McGlockton, and Zackery to an extent), so I’m nervous that we could be lacking talent in the coming years unless we grab someone good from the transfer portal. But I do believe in Earl’s culture-building and overall vision for the program, and he’s done a very good job so far.

Early thoughts on this team’s expectations for next season?

Kieran: No Quinten Post is gonna be strange. I’m not really sure who’s going to be the team’s go-to scorer next year, and next year may go a long way towards determining Earl Grant’s future.

Brian: I expect last year to be similar to this season and last season. Right around .500 with a win or two in the ACC tournament.

Curtis: I’m expecting a regression, mostly because they’re going to lose Post’s production and possibly others. Every program goes through these yearly cycles of additions and subtractions, though, so I’m not too worried about the overall state of the program.

Who’s your pick to win March Madness?

Kieran: Give me a Final Four of Baylor, Utah State (why not!!), UConn, and Houston. I really just want to see UConn and Houston in the championship, so that’s what I’m hoping for. I’ll take UConn to win it all.

Brian: I don’t see anyone beating UConn again this season.

Curtis: I’m still figuring my bracket out, but my early favorite is Arizona.

Boston College baseball was swept by NC State last weekend, falling to 7-6 on the season. They played two out-of-conference games this week, against Merrimack and Siena College, before returning to ACC play against Pittsburgh over the weekend. They won four of the five games and also claimed their first ACC series win of 2024.

On Tuesday, March 12, the Eagles played the Merrimack Warriors (3-11) in Chestnut Hill at the Harrington Athletics Village. The Birdball bats exploded again in this game and BC got back in the win column with a 17-7 victory in seven innings.

Merrimack took a 2-0 lead in the first, but BC took their first lead by scoring three runs in the bottom of the inning. Cameron Leary had an RBI double, Vince Cimini had an RBI single, and Parker Landwehr hit an RBI sac fly for the Eagles in the inning. In the second inning, Kyle Wolff hit a bases-loaded double to left field, putting BC up 6-2. BC put four more runs on the scoreboard in the third inning on singles by Sam McNulty, Leary, and Cimini. Birdball took a 12-2 lead in the fourth after McNulty scored on an error and Cimini hit an RBI single to left field.

Merrimack got back on the board in the fifth, scoring five runs to cut the deficit to five, but BC pitching shut them down for the rest of the ballgame. The Eagles scored once in the sixth and twice in the seventh, ending the scoring in the game. Cam Caraher, Leary, and Cimini all had three hits and Leary had four RBI, Wolff had six, and Cimini had three. Gavin Hasche earned his first win of the season by pitching a scoreless two innings.

The bats stayed on fire on Wednesday as the Eagles beat Siena (0-13) 20-4 in seven innings. The Eagles led 8-0 after just two innings, thanks to a few BC hits and a few costly errors by the Saints. Nick Wang homered in the fifth and sixth innings, as BC scored four runs in the fifth and five in the sixth. Wang went four for five, with two homers and five RBI. Center fielder Owen DeShazo collected three hits and three RBI. Brian McMonagle pitched three innings of one-run ball with four strikeouts, earning his second win of the year.

Over the weekend, Boston College traveled to Pennsylvania to take on the Pitt Panthers (10-5, 1-3). Unfortunately, BC’s bats couldn’t out-mash their opponents for a third game in a row and the Eagles lost 12-5.

With ace John West on the mound, Pitt scored four runs in the second inning. Wang hit a solo home run in the third and then smashed a three-run double to right field in the fourth inning, tying the game at 4-4. Michael Farinelli took over for West and allowed the Panthers to score twice in the fifth and sixth innings, taking an 8-4 lead. BC did score once in the eighth, but Pitt scored four more runs in the eighth and took the first game of the series.

Wang continued his hot streak, finishing with three hits and four RBI, but only three other Eagles had hits in the game. Farinelli was pegged with the loss, his second of the season, after giving up four runs on two walks and five hits in 1.2 innings. In total, BC pitching gave up five walks, 18 hits, and 12 runs, as the staff continued to struggle against ACC opponents.

Saturday’s game was a very different story for the BC offense. They scored at least once in each of the first five innings, and Pitt was never really within striking distance, as the Eagles won 16-10.

Cimini opened the scoring in the first with an RBI single and Adam Magpoc made the score 2-0 with an RBI double. Pitt tied the game with a homer in the bottom of the inning, but BC snatched the lead back in the second with a Wang RBI double.

In the third, Cimini hit a solo homer to center field to give the Eagles a 4-2 lead. BC cracked the game open in the fourth inning, scoring eight runs in the frame. Patrick Roche had an RBI triple, Wang mashed a two-run homer to center, Cimini had an RBI single, Magpoc hit his own two-run shot to center, and Roche singled up the middle for an RBI to end the scoring. Pitt scored one run in the fourth, which BC negated in the fifth on a two-RBI knock from Caraher, making the score 14-3. Pitt scored twice in the sixth before BC scratched another run across in the seventh. The Panthers hit two homers in the seventh and eighth to bring them within five runs, and the Eagles added one final run after Chris Markovic scored on a balk in the ninth.

All nine starting batters had at least one hit, with five of them collecting at least two. Cimini had four hits, four runs, and four RBI and both Magpoc and Wang had two hits and three RBI. A.J. Colarusso earned his second win of 2024 after going five innings, giving up 12 hits, five runs, and striking out two.

In Sunday’s rubber match, the Eagles earned their first ACC series win of the year by beating Pitt, 8-3. BC jumped on the Panthers early, scoring two runs in the first and third innings, and the pitching staff performed very well. In the top of the first, Wolff grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored Roche from third and then Cimini hit a single to right field that scored Wang. Cimini continued his strong weekend with a two-run homer to center field in the third.

Both teams scored once in the fifth, and Pitt scored two runs on a single to center in the bottom of the sixth, making the score 5-3 Boston College. The Eagles extended their lead on a Cameron Leary solo shot in the seventh and a Magpoc double in the eighth and won the game 7-3. Sean Hard started the game and pitched three scoreless innings and struck out five batters. Eric Schroder earned the win, his first of the year, after going 4.1 innings, giving up two earned runs with one strikeout. Michael Farinelli ended the game with 1.2 innings of scoreless ball.

All in all, Birdball had a very successful week and improved to 11-7 on the season. They’ll be back in action on Tuesday in a home game against the Northeastern Huskies.

They’re not done yet!

Late on Sunday night, the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) announced its field for 2024, and the Boston College Eagles man’s basketball team found themselves invited to play against Providence College on Tuesday night.

BC made an unexpected run to the ACC Tournament quarterfinals last week, knocking off Clemson and taking Virginia to overtime, two teams that are competing in March Madness later this month. Although their performance was not nearly good enough to earn a bid to the big dance (like NC State managed to pull off), the Eagles performed well enough to earn a postseason appearance in the tournament for teams just below the full NCAA bracket. It’s Boston College’s first postseason tournament appearance since the 2017-18 season when they lost in the first round of the NIT to Western Kentucky.

Their opponent this time around is local rival Providence College. PC made a similar run to BC in their conference tournament, though with a much more impressive upset win over #8 Creighton. The Friars ended up falling to #10 Marquette in the Big East semifinal, though, and failed to qualify for the Big Dance.

PC was 21-13 overall this season, with big wins over Marquette, Wisconsin, and two wins over Creighton. They stumbled a bit towards the end of the regular season, going 1-3 in their last 4 games, but their Big East tournament victory over Creighton should silence any doubters about their ability to show up in big games.

Boston College and Providence College will play on Tuesday March 19th at 7pm on ESPNU. The game will be held in Providence at the Amica Mutual Pavilion.

Eagles hold on for a late win in Hockey East Quarterfinals

The Boston College men’s hockey team knocked off UConn 5-4 in the quarterfinals of the Hockey East tournament, avoiding a third period collapse to advance to the semifinals. The Eagles got goals from four different players and looked on the way to a comfortable win after two periods, but needed a late goal from Jack Malone to come away with the result they wanted.

The Eagles jumped out to a lead just over two minutes into the game on a goal from Jacob Bengtsson. BC’s third line put together a great shift of forechecking and won some battles down low before Bengtsson took a shot from the point that found its way through for his third goal of the season. Jack Malone doubled the lead just a few shifts later, scoring his first goal in over a month to make it a 2-0 lead. Malone’s first shot on a two-on-one rush was saved, but the puck squeaked through the UConn goalie and into the crease behind him, and Malone was the first person to it, burying it for his 10th goal of the season. Jacob Fowler made a few nice stops in the shifts immediately following Malone’s goal before Drew Fortescue made it 3-0, jumping on a loose puck and firing it home after a nice passing play between Malone and Oskar Jellvik to set up the scoring chance. UConn got a goal back less than a minute later to cut into BC’s lead and get themselves back into a game that was in danger of getting away from them early. The Eagles held on to their two-goal lead for the rest of the period, however, and took a 3-1 lead into the second period.

After the electric action to start the game, the second period looked a lot different, with both teams failing to create much in terms of scoring chances. The Eagles had an early power play that didn’t amount to much and a handful of half chances throughout the period and did a good job at keeping UConn to the outside in their own zone, but it looked like it would be a scoreless period until late. With under 30 seconds to go in the period, UConn was called for a too-many men on the ice penalty, and BC made them play. After a key faceoff win, Eamon Powell fired a wrist shot from the point, which Ryan Leonard was able to redirect from in front for his 26th goal of the season to give BC a 4-1 lead after two periods of play.

UConn got right back in the game early in the third, scoring a quick goal on a passing play from below the goal line before adding another less than a minute later on a shot from the slot to beat Fowler to make it a 4-3 game just over a minute into the period. Fowler came up with a few big saves in the next few shifts, but UConn eventually tied things up with a power play goal that barely crossed the goal line before Fowler could swipe it away. UConn continued to control most of the play after tying it up, but it was Jack Malone who got on the board next, scoring his second goal of the nice with a gorgeous redirection of a pass from Andre Gasseau to give BC the lead back. They had some chances to extend their lead shortly thereafter, including a full 1:56 of a five-on-three advantage but they were unable to convert. They had to sweat things out late as a result, with UConn pulling their goalie and Jamie Armstrong taking a penalty shortly thereafter to give the Huskies a six-on-four advantage, but the Eagles were able to hold off a late push to avoid overtime and win this one 5-4.

That makes it ten wins in a row for the Eagles, who will certainly take the result despite how the third period looked at time. It certainly wasn’t the prettiest of games down the stretch, but with the win, BC has now made it to the Hockey East semifinals where they will be looking to win their first Hockey East Tournament since 2012. They’ll have a chance to make it to the finals when they take on UMass on Friday night, with BU and Maine playing in the other semifinal game.

The playoffs are finally here! After earning a first round bye, the Boston College men’s hockey team plays its first postseason game of the year tonight against the UConn Huskies in the Hockey East quarterfinals. The winner of this game advances to TD Garden next weekend for the chance to bring home a conference championship. UConn is coming hot off of a big 4-1 win over UVM, and took BC to overtime earlier in the season, so this match-up could get intense.

After Dontavia Waggoner announced her intention to return to Boston College for one more year yesterday, captain Kaylah Ivey also announced her plan to return to the team earlier today. Ivey graduates from BC this year, but was a red shirt junior this season after missing last year due a torn ACL and meniscus.

Like Waggoner, Ivey brings both skill and leadership to this BC team. As the team’s number one playmaker, Ivey led the Eagles with an impressive 191 assists, good for 10th overall in the NCAA. This also puts her in 4th place in program history for single season assists. She made a career high 12 assists in BC’s postseason victory over Clemson. Ivey also scored 143 points for BC this season, including 32 3-pointers.

In her 3 seasons playing for BC, Ivey has 273 career points, 295 career assists, and 125 career rebounds. Despite the fact that she was returning from a major injury, she showed significant improvement in all aspects of her game this season, and one can only consume her skills will continue to improve next year now that she’s got a full season back under her belt.

The fact that BC now has a pair of graduating seniors returning to the program for a fifth year is reassuring about the direction of this program, as in previous years we’ve been reporting on transfers instead.

Trophy season has begun! The Eagles secured the top seed in the Hockey East playoffs two weeks ago, and clinched their 20th league win last weekend against Merrimack. To open up the postseason, the Eags will be taking on the eighth seeded UConn Huskies at Kelley Rink.

The Eagles last took on the Huskies way back in November, defeating them 5-4 in OT before shutting them out 3-0 the next night. Since then, the Huskies are 10-10-1, and are entering this matchup off of a 4-1 octofinal win against Vermont.

On offense, UConn is led by Matthew Wood, who has 26 points in 34 games, followed by Chase Bradley, who has 22 points in 30 games. In net, Arsenii Sergeev and Ethan Haider have gotten around the same number of starts, though Sergeev was in goal on Wednesday against Vermont. Sergeev has a .918 save percentage and a 8-7-0 record over 15 games, while Haider has a .906 save percentage and a 7-11-2 record over 21 games. The Eagles faced both goalies back in November, but will likely see Sergeev in net on Saturday.

Though the Eagles have set themselves up well as the top seed, UConn always brings a fight to Kelley Rink, so this should be a good game. As always, go Eags!

This group of players will be talked about for a long time

That’s a lot of Eagles! Hockey East announced their men’s all-star teams for the 2023-24 regular season on Monday morning, and six Boston College players found themslves on either the first or second teams. This is what they looked like:

Hockey East First Team All-Stars

G: Jacob Fowler, Fr., Boston College

D: Lane Hutson, So., Boston University

D: Ryan Ufko, Jr., Massachusetts

F: Macklin Celebrini, Fr., Boston University *

F: Cutter Gauthier, So., Boston College

F: Will Smith, Fr., Boston College

*denotes unanimous selection

Hockey East Second Team All-Stars

G: Michael Hrabal, Fr., Massachusetts

D: Eamon Powell, Sr., Boston College

D: Tom Willander, Fr., Boston University

F: Ryan Leonard, Fr., Boston College

F: Bradly Nadeau, Fr., Maine

F: Gabe Perreault, Fr., Boston College

Who invited UMass to the first team? If it wasn’t obvious already, BC and BU were the overwhelming dominant forces in Hockey East this season, with just those two teams claiming 9 of 12 spots on the top two all-star teams. The Eagles got an edge over the Terriers, too, earning spots for six players versus BU’s three.

What shocked me was that Macklin Celebrini was the only unanimous nod to the first team. Will Smith has more games played, assists, and total points than Celebrini, and leads the entire nation in points while taking significantly fewer shots (98) than Celebrini (153). Is that not enough for a unanimous selection? Who are you putting over him? Smith has completely lived up to the hype surrounding him after he was taken 4th overall in the 2023 NHL Draft, the highest-ever selection for a Boston College player. His offense has been instrumental to BC’s huge season at the top of the nation.

Cutter Gauthier isn’t far behind Smith himself, statistically. Gauthier leads the nation in goals with 32 and has just six fewer points (51) than his teammate Smith, who leads the nation in that category. What’s so impressive about Cutter’s performance this year is that he’s done it largely without the all-star supporting cast that Smith, Leonard, and Perreault have enjoyed with each other. Andre Gasseau and Oskar Jellvik are certainly very talented players, but Gauthier’s performance on that line has required him to be the absolute offensive focal point, constantly drawing tough defense and being forced to make plays in heavy traffic. He’s excelled at it, and a selection to the Hockey East first all-star team is clearly deserved. One has to wonder why he wasn’t a unanimous selection as well...

Jacob Fowler was named the Hockey East goaltender of the year and is the only goalie in Hockey East to be named a top-10 finalist for the Richter Award, so it’s no surprise that he was selected to the first Hockey East all-star team. What a terrific season in net for any player, nevermind a freshman.

Speaking of national statistical leaders, Ryan Leonard is another Eagle that has topped the college hockey leaderboard. He leads the nation in plus/minus after being an instrumental force on both ends of the ice, playing with a ton of physicality and making winning plays in every game. His goals and points totals are both in the top-10 nationally, too, and his electric shot to open up scoring in the first BU/BC game of the season lives rent-free in my mind. It’s a shame that there are only three spots for forwards on the first all-star team, because Ryan Leonard’s performance this season is up there with the rest of them.

Gabe Perreault may be the true unsung hero of Boston College’s season, though. It was Perreault that was leading the nation in points and assists for much of the regular season, but an injury cut his year short and he fell back on the leaderboards as a result, though he still finished in the top-6 in both categories. Gabe is what makes the freshman line go, making a ton of dynamic plays to get his teammates in scoring position and he’s a big reason why Smith and Leonard put up such impressive goal numbers. It’s also clear that in his absence for the past few weeks, the BC offense hasn’t been the same powerhouse it was for the majority of the season. His return for the playoffs is going to be hugely important if the Eagles want to make a run at a national title.

Finally, team captain Eamon Powell got his well-deserved spot on the second all-star team, too. The biggest question heading into the 2023-24 season for Boston College was its defense. The BC team finished below .500 last season despite some great offense from Cutter Gauthier, Nikita Nesterenko, Trevor Kuntar, and Colby Ambrosio, and it had a lot to do with the defense being ranked 32nd in Goals Against Average. Powell took his leadership role and seriously helped the team step up its defensive performance this season, as the Eagles now rank 4th in the nation in Goals Against Average, despite needing to incorporate multiple new players on that side of the ice. And his offense has been great, too, scoring the 4th-most points per game by a BC defenseman since 2000. The team is in great hands while Powell is captain.
