BC's Warren Zola weighs in on the Hayes/Milano debate

+

Why was this masterful? 1) Kevin earned a college degree; 2) he won two national championships and improved himself by competing at the highest level (finishing third in the Hobey Baker Award this past season); and 3) has the luxury his contemporaries do not--he's an NHL free agent, in demand, at the age of 22. This other side of the question is the saga of Sonny Milano. Milano, who committed to Boston College, was the 16th selection in the 2014 NHL draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets. The plan was to play at Boston College for a few years, honing his skills while the Blue Jackets still owned his rights. He dominated in international competition all summer, posted a video that went viral on YouTube highlighting his stick skills, and announced last week that he would forgo college and head straight to the Ontario Hockey League to begin his pro career.

BC Ticket Promotion

First, I appreciate BC's marketing department trying to figure out a way to get more fans to Alumni. I’d love to live in a world where BC would consider building a retractable dome because the demand for tickets justified a new stadium with 100K capacity. But this is an example of a promotion that is doomed to fail. A number of reasons why: • Seems to me that this late in the game, if someone wanted BC season tickets, they’d have done it already. This wreaks of a last ditch effort to get fans to buy season tickets and the incentive is weak. • It’s unrealistic to expect a friend to pony up and buy either season tickets or 10+ tickets to an event just so you can get $25 bucks for a future event. • Then explain you have no idea if they’ll be sitting anywhere close to you. • Then explain to that person that they likely won’t be able to park on campus or tailgate. • If you were able to convince a young alumnus to actually do this, you’ll have to let them know this doesn’t apply to the young alumni season ticket program. Let’s crawl before we walk, BC Marketing. Or better yet, offer a scaled referral program. Refer one friend to attend one game at BC? Concession voucher. Refer a friend to buy 4+ tickets and a single-game, Comm Ave pass, get $50 credit to the gift store or to a future BC event. Actually, get a friend to buy season tickets or 10+ tickets to a single game? Get sideline passes to a game or courtside seats. Oh, and offer a young alumni referral program… why eliminate the referral program to the last ten graduating classes? This isn’t perfect and maybe some of the $$ don’t make sense for my quick scaled version, but BC Marketing can do better than this.
