Maybe Swofford is not a genius, to some of the readers, but he is certainly a statesman.
Since 2006, 11 of the 12 current ACC schools have had a player taken in the first round. Florida State leads with the most first-round picks during that time with seven, followed by Boston College (5), Miami (5), Virginia (4) and North Carolina (4).
I got the chance to interview Uncle Dave right before he (and I) graduate. Got to talking about how he responded to losing the starting job 2 years ago, his relationship with Chase Rettig and, after all that, his advice to his fellow students who find themselves facing adversity.
"It was pretty cool," Joe said. "We had breakfast this morning together, and we were talking about how we never played against each other, we'd always played with each other. It was kind of weird at first, actually, seeing him on the other team. But it was neat. Mom and dad were up in the stands, and it was a pretty cool experience for the family."
As most of us already know, the Panthers only have five picks to work with(barring a trade) in the 2013 NFL Draft. With that being said, you can be sure that this relative shortage of picks makes them all the more valuable. Believe it or not, the same could be said of the Undrafted Free Agents who will be available to sign immediately following the draft. Today I'll be taking a quick look at a couple of former college teammates who are prime candidates to become either late round draft picks or UDFAs.
If you'd like to help a Boston College alum directly affected by the Marathon bombings, please consider helping Lynch School of Education graduate Patrick Downes '05 and his wife Jessica, a nurse at MGH, who were both seriously injured by the blast.
Sending positive thoughts to New Mexico State redshirt freshman cornerbback Miles Washington who suffered a spinal cord injury over the weekend.
In his second season in Chestnut Hill, coach Steve Donahue improved the Eagles record from 9-22 to 16-17. No surprise considering two years ago he was basically starting from scratch. His third season should be even better as BC brings back all five starters, including the ACC Freshman of the Year, guard Olivier Hanlan. The recruiting class has no real star power, but Darryl Hicks is an athletic SG from Kentucky who can do exactly what Donahue likes his guards to do: knock down threes. A .500 record in ACC play is definitely possible for the boys from Boston.
"I really do believe that it’s a personal decision," said Feaster. "What we’ve done in his case — and what we do with any of these guys — is present to them the landscape. What it looks like. What the situation is. Where we think you are in your development. We said (to Gaudreau), ‘We’re here with a contract and we’re ready to go if you are.’ In his case, the advisor got back to us and said that as much as they appreciate the offer . . . he really feels that he wants to go back and he wants to try to get stronger, just the physical-maturity aspect of it.
"As we told him, ‘We were there for you last summer (after the freshman season) and were prepared to sign you. We’re here for you now. And we’re going to be there for you at the end of next year, too.’"
"Obviously there’s a little added excitement there, just coming home and being able to play in...
