On Friday, Let's Play Hockey and the Herb Brooks Foundation announced the 18 candidates for the inaugural Mike Richter Award, a new award that honors the most outstanding goaltender in NCAA men's hockey. The inaugural award will be presented at the 2014 NCAA Men's Frozen Four in Philadelphia.
Boston College freshman goaltender Thatcher Demko is one of those 18 candidates. The San Diego native has backstopped the top-ranked Eagles to a 13-1-3 record, posting a 1.74 goals-against average and .937 save percentage in 17 starts. Demko started the season splitting time with junior goalie Brian Billett, but has started in 11 of the Eagles' last 13 games and has been a big part of the Eagles' 19-game unbeaten streak.
