Boston College's Mike Cavanaugh To Be Named Next UConn Hockey Coach

Douglas Jones-US PRESSWIRE

Mike Cavanaugh set to become the fourth men's hockey coach in UConn program history.

According to the Hartford Courant's Mike Anthony, Boston College associate head coach Mike Cavanaugh has entered into negotiations to become the next UConn Huskies men's hockey coach.

Cavanaugh has spent the last 18 seasons behind the Eagles bench alongside Jerry York and has helped guide the Eagles to four National Championships in 2001, 2008, 2010 and 2012. He has previously served as an assistant coach at Dartmouth and Bowling Green under York. The long-time Eagles assistant was named one of three finalists, along with Huskies interim coach Dave Berard and former Denver coach George Gwozdecky.

The UConn program is transitioning from Atlantic Hockey to Hockey East for the 2014-15 season and will play one final year as a member of Atlantic Hockey. The program will start awarding scholarships for the first time and needs to work out an actual facilities plan not "Hockey East games at the XL Center and Freitas for everything else."

Feelings are mixed. Overall, I'm pretty pleased that Cavanaugh finally gets a shot at running his own program but we'll clearly miss him on The Heights. This will certainly add to the Boston College-UConn rivalry once Coach Cav is able to get the program competitive by ~2025.

Looking at the big picture, one has to wonder whether this paves the way for associate coach Greg Brown to become York's successor or whether Cav will return to The Heights after cutting his teeth with the upstart Huskies. Also interesting to note that during next season's holiday break, Boston College will be without both associate head coaches from this past season as Greg Brown will serve as an assistant coach of the 2014 U.S. National Junior Team at the IIHF World Junior Championship in Malmo, Sweden.

Best of luck to Coach Cav in Storrs. Leave your thoughts on the hire below.
