Boston College Football: Could Tyler Murphy Transfer To Boston College?

Al Messerschmidt

Could the former Florida QB be heading to the Heights next fall?

Yesterday, reports came out that junior Florida quarterback Tyler Murphy is going to transfer from the Gators. Murphy was a starter for six of the games for the Gators, after starter Jeff Driskel was lost after breaking his leg in Week 3. However Murphy himself was sidelined after aggravating a shoulder injury against LSU in October. At the end of the season Will Muschamp announced that it would be an open competition for the starting job next season, and apparently not wanting to risk his final year of eligibility, Murphy decided to leave.

Now why is this interesting to Boston College? Because Tyler Murphy has a strong relationship with Eagles head coach Steve Addazio. According to reports that came out during Murphy's recruitment, Addazio went to high school with Tyler's father Peter, and wanted Murphy at Florida not because of his family connections but because of what he saw on tapes and visits. As Offensive Coordinator, Addazio was also his lead recruiter, and ended up grabbing the two star Murphy for the Gators. Murphy is also from Connecticut, and being close to play in front of family and friends may be a draw for him. He graduated from Florida on Saturday and would be eligible to play immediately in 2014.

Why would Boston College need Murphy? For a few reasons. Boston College has some depth at quarterback, but almost all of it is untested. Josh Bordner may or may not be back for his final season, and Mack Lowrie, Christian Suntrup and James Walsh all haven't played a down of college ball. Couple that with true freshman Darius Wade, and BC has a potentially tenuous predicament at quarterback.

Getting Murphy here would be a solid move for the Eagles because it would allow the younger kids (Walsh/Lowrie/Wade) to continue to grow while providing the Eagles with a quarterback who has experience at the college level. I want Darius Wade to come in here and play, but the odds of a true freshman being overwhelmingly successful right away are relatively slim, especially compared to a senior. Plus Murphy is a dual threat quarterback, something Addazio and Ryan Day want in their system. If Wade could learn under Murphy for a season, this would be a win win for all involved.

What kind of player is Murphy? I talked to my friend who is a lifelong Gator fan, and he said that Murphy's ceiling would be Dominique Davis. He said that he has talent, and there were games that he was immensely talented (threw for three touchdowns against Arkansas, ran for 80 yards against Tennessee), but other days where he struggled (three interceptions against Vanderbilt). He finished the 2013 season with 1216 passing yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions.

Will Tyler Murphy come to Boston College? That is something that we will have to wait and see. However in my opinion it would be invaluable for Boston College to have someone step right in with experience, who can run that offense and take that question mark out of a year that has a bunch of them. He has a relationship with the head coach, so we could have another Matt Patchan situation on our hands. Then again I could be reading too much into this.
