Boston College head coach Steve Addazio was unapologetic in his National Signing Day press conference. While not taking anything away from this year's class, you got the sense that he realizes that this year's recruiting class may look a bit underwhelming on paper.
Addazio and the new Eagles coaching staff came into a difficult situation, asked to honor all 17 verbal commitments in this year's class. He lost a few along the way -- RB LeShun Daniels (Iowa), WR Dan Monteroso (Purdue) and QB Tim Boyle (Connecticut) -- and a few more late targets chose other destinations.
Daniels spot in the class would be replaced by upstate NY running back Tyler Rouse, while dual threat QB James Walsh was brought in to run Addazio / Day's offense. Addazio talked about needing to beef up the number of tight ends in the program and his son, Syracuse transfer Louie Addazio, will have two years of eligibility remaining after he sits out a year per NCAA transfer rules. Finally, former five star OT Matt Patchan was brought in to fill an immediate need on the offensive line. Patchan gets the program to 16 offensive linemen which is where Addazio wants the BC program to be at year in and year out.
Unfortunately, as transfers, Matt Patchan and Louie Addazio don't count towards the Eagles' final haul in the eyes of the recruiting services, while Rouse only came onto the recruiting services radar in the past few days (Rouse didn't even have a Rivals page until yesterday).
Still, the results are underwhelming ... at least on paper. The Eagles brought in the least highly regarded class in the expanded conference this year. It wasn't all that close, either. BC's class ranked 87th nationally per Rivals, 90th per Scout and 91st per 247 Sports (ESPN only ranks the top 40 programs) for a composite ranking dead last in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
