Boston College Football Coaching Updates: Updates on Diaco, Sullivan

Updates on Notre Dame DC Bob Diaco, Tampa Bay Bucs OC Mike Sullivan and other Boston College football coaching candidates.

NBC Sports Inside the Irish's Keith Arnold adds some thoughts about a possible Bob Diaco hire. Arnold mentions that Diaco isn't taking a non-AQ job or a job in the SEC. He also attempting to point to some drawbacks about the Notre Dame DC taking the Boston College head job.

Of course, any reports of an interview are a long way from Diaco getting hired. As a first time head coach, Diaco might not be ready to be a major program's CEO, and a major media market like Boston might take some shots at a coach that doesn't always come off as eloquent in his dealings with the press.

Clearly Arnold isn't very familiar with the Boston media.

The SB Nation Tampa Bay Buccaneers blog Bucs Nation took notice of Mike Sullivan's interest in the BC job and would hate to see him go.

Worst of all, if the Bucs do lose Sullivan they'll be looking at a fourth offensive overhaul in five years. That kind of inconsistency on offense can be devastating for the development of young players, especially so a young quarterback like Josh Freeman. Hopefully, Boston College looks elsewhere, or the Bucs are able to keep Mike Sullivan in house with a hefty raise, because they can ill afford to lose him.

In addition to Sullivan, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman, Kromer, Carmichael Jr. and New York Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride have all expressed interest in the vacant BC head coaching position.

We've previously taken a look at Kromer, Carmichael Jr. and Sullivan. I would be surprised if Roman gets a look. His name has been linked to the Cal coaching search. Gilbride probably has a strong recommendation from Tom Coughlin, but his age -- he's only four years Spaz's junior -- and lack of recent college experience are likely deal-breakers.

Sounds like we could have an announcement within the next 7-10 days.

In other coaching search news, Butch Jones was in West Lafayette on Sunday, interviewing for the vacant Purdue job. Cal interviewed Darrell Hazell on Sunday.

South Florida parted ways with Skip Holtz after the Bulls finished a disappointing 3-9, 1-6 Big East. In three seasons in Tampa, Holtz finished 16-21, 5-16 Big East. South Florida is the 10th BCS school to fire its head coach this offseason, joining Arkansas, Auburn, BC, California, Colorado, Kentucky, N.C. State, Purdue and Tennessee. N.C. State (Dave Doeren) and Kentucky (Mark Stoops) are the only programs to have already filled the position.
