So, Do I Get A Boston College T-Shirt?

Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports

In a few weeks, my beautiful, brilliant daughter is going to leave for Boston College to study biology. I am proud that she got into BC, and am thrilled that she's going to study what I did as an undergraduate and graduate.

Yes, I went to Syracuse (she was totally uninterested in even applying). No, I have never hated BC, because I expended most of my vitriol for Georgetown. I know you guys really despise Notre Dame, but for me, it is and always will be Georgetown.

My daughter isn't much into sports. Well, she loves baseball, since I took her to 100's of games as a season ticket holder. We even went to a couple of World Series games. She's an NL fan, and kind of dislikes the Yankees. Which is a good thing. But may like the Red Sox. Which isn't.

She doesn't quite get college sports. I explained that it's impossible to explain until you go to the school and start rooting for your team. I told her to enjoy the experience. I told her that even if football wasn't something she'd love, part of it is just watching your school out on a bright crisp New England Saturday. She asked me if it was the same at Syracuse, I had to explain that generally we sucked at football, and we played in a dumb dome. She said she'd wear the Syracuse sweatshirt I gave her (in a clumsy attempt to get her to apply). I told her to just buy a new BC one.

She reminded me of all the times I was screaming at the TV during basketball season. I had to explain that basketball is an entirely different issue for Syracuse alumni. I told her that in my lifetime Syracuse has been to 5 final fours. She asked me how many BC had in my lifetime, and, well, you know.

I told her that Syracuse and BC will play many times during her 4 years in Boston (and hopefully, another 4 in graduate school getting her Ph.D.). I told her to send me a BC t-shirt, and I promise to wear it whenever I'm watching BC play another ACC school. Except when it's Syracuse.

She then asked what she could say about Syracuse if a cute guy though she was into sports. I just said the coach picks his nose a lot on TV. No cute guys better be hitting on my girl. To me, she's still like 5.

Anyways, I will cheer for you guys, except when I won't. But I'm glad we're in the same conference again. It makes me feel close to my daughter, even though she's 3000 miles away for college. When's Parent's Weekend?
