Jimmy And Kevin Hayes Named to US Team for IIHF World Championships

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

The 2014 IIHF World Championship will be hosted by Belarus from May 9-May 25

The IIHF World Championship is sort of the red-headed step child of international hockey tournaments, particularly in Olympic years, but it is often a place to see some under the radar players get international exposure in meaningful games. That will be the case for at least two Boston College hockey alums, as Jimmy Hayes and Kevin Hayes were both among the first 15 players named to the US team's roster.

The roster process for this tournament is a little unusual - players whose NHL teams did not make the playoffs are available for early selection, while room is left for players who could be added if their team is bounced in the first round of the playoffs. There are also some guys who end up popping in in the middle of the tournament if their team loses in the second round. Chris Kreider and Cam Atkinson are two players I wouldn't be surprised to see named to the roster if their teams get bounced; I doubt there will be many (if any) repeats on this roster from the Olympic team roster, and both of those guys have potential to be players for the US in the years to come.

There is also the Johnny Gaudreau question; Chris Peters of the United States of Hockey believes there's a strong chance Gaudreau will be added to the World Championships roster at some point, and that Bill Arnold may join him as well. Since neither Gaudreau nor Arnold are eligible to compete in the AHL playoffs, I'm guessing class schedules would be the only thing potentially keeping them from roster spot contention.

The other Hockey East alum on the initial roster is Connor Hellebuyck, the recently-departed Lowell goalie who left after his sophomore season to sign with the WInnipeg Jets.

Those of you who followed the US's run in the 2013 World Juniors will be pretty familiar with many of the guys named to the roster so far, per usahockey.com:
