30 for 30 - The Big East

Who saw 30 for 30 this week? It may warrant a "B+" for historic accuracy, but it did a great job of bringing back those great days of the '80s when The Big East took college basketball by storm. Those of you who remember the dawn of the Big East, are fans of BC hoops or are simply students of college basketball will enjoy the documentary. It handled BC's departure in an even-handed manner, and is a reminder that in college athletics the three most important sports are football, football and football.

There was one fact stated in the documentary that has been driving me out of my mind. Of the 8 original Big East teams that played in the first Madison Square Garden tournament in 1983, a tournament in which BC was the number 1 seed, 6 of those teams played in the Final Four by the end of the decade. Let me say that again, 6 of the 8 original Big East teams went to the Final Four in the 80's, the 7th team, UConn went on to win 3 national championships in the years to come. The 8th team, of course, is BC. How is this possible?!?! You would think BC would get there by accident if nothing else. Every other team! Even Seton Hall for Pete's sake made it to the Final Four. I don't know what else to say......
