Boston College Football Recruiting: Kicker Will Mahar Commits To Boston College

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

New York senior may find role as kicker on team.

Boston College apparently has landed a second kicker for the recruiting class of 2014. Rochester, NY native Will Mahar has committed to the Eagles according to local papers and the young man's twitter page:

Aquinas' traditional local rival also has a specialist heading to Division I. McQuaid kicker Will Mahar has committed to Boston College. Mahar was a first-team all-state pick in Class A in 2013 and also stood out at wide receiver for the Knights.

This is interesting because BC already has a kicker on the team (Alex Howell), and a recruit coming in (Mike Knoll). Also you never know as well, Howell didn't play much last season, and you never want to take him coming back for granted, especially since Steve Addazio didn't recruit him. According to Mahar's recruiting page, which was difficult to find, he excelled at wide receiver as well, so maybe BC is taking a flyer on him at that position.

Mahar has had some accolades thrown his way, which he lists on his recruiting page:

I am currently rated a 4.5 star kicker by Kohl's Kicking and have been ranked #1 overall kicker for my age group by ESPN. I was honored to be the only Specialist Listed in Tom Lemming's 2012 Prep Football Report as the "Kicker to Watch" and am included in his report again this year, 2013. For my performance in the 2012 season, I was honored with 1st team All Conference, 1st Team all Area, 2nd team All State and Kohl's Kicking 2nd Team All American for Kick Offs. I have also started as a Wide Receiver and Safety/Cornerback as a sophomore and again this year as a junior.

Whatever the case may be, Mahar appears to be a preferred walk on recruit. He doesn't appear to have offers from any other schools, or a Rivals/247/Scout/ESPN account. Colleges grab kids like this all the time, so this isn't a surprise, but as always wanted to make you aware that there is another dude in the fold!

Welcome to the Heights, Will!
