Boston College Daily Links: Strong Weekend for BC Athletics

Boston College Athletics

Happy Labor Day, Eagles! Doesn't it feel good to have a winning record?

While we were all celebrating BC football's victory over Villanova, and our first winning record since 2010 (!), BC's under-the-radar sports teams racked up a pretty solid weekend.

The men's soccer team set the tone for the weekend with a huge 2-1 OT victory at BU - a soul-crushing loss for the Terriers, who held a 1-0 lead at halftime in front of a big crowd celebrating BU's first game as a member of the Patriot League. Chris Ager scored both goals for BC. It's always nice to get a win against BU - and now the men's and women's soccer teams have both done so this fall. The Eagles (1-0) face Quinnipiac today at 5 PM in their home opener on Newton Campus Soccer Field.

The women's soccer team had a somewhat disappointing start to the season, going 1-2 in their first three against Stanford, BU, and UConn. They bounced back from Wednesday's loss to the Huskies with a wild 6-5 win at Hofstra on Sunday afternoon, with sophomore McKenzie Meehan's hat trick leading the way. BC looks to get above .500 on Thursday night when they host The Ohio State University.

The Right Honorable Brian Favat pegged the #19-ranked BC field hockey team as one of the school's best hopes at notching an ACC championship this year. They made him look prescient with a very strong start to their season, teeing off on Vermont 10-1 in their opener on Friday before edging Rutgers 2-1 on Saturday. This came on the heels of exhibition wins over BU and the University of Toronto last week. BC hosts Maine on Tuesday at 4 PM as they attempt to climb up the national rankings.

The women's volleyball team traveled to the Western Carolina Invitational this weekend and came back 2-2 on the season after 4 matches, splitting on both Friday and Saturday.

I watched a little bit of the Alabama-Virginia Tech game on Saturday, and did see Virginia Tech's shocking long touchdown play early in the game. Immediately, ESPN showed a shellshocked Alabama fan in the crowd, scarcely able to believe the sight of the Tide giving up a touchdown. I immediately said to my friend that there *needed* to be a GIF of that. Well, the internet is a magical place, so of course, it happened:

On the one hand, I hate to keep piling on UConn, since we didn't exactly set the world aflame against Villanova. But on the other hand, of course I like continuing to pile on UConn.

The Misery Index Week 1: College Football's Most Miserable Fanbases

2. Connecticut: Sometimes miserable fan bases are justified in their misery, and there's no disputing UConn belongs in that category. Three years ago, they're playing in the Fiesta Bowl. Now they're getting left out of the Atlantic Coast Conference and losing to Towson in front of mediocre crowds at a stadium 40 minutes from campus. Oh, and they're being coached by Paul Pasqualoni, whose last winning season was at Syracuse in 2001. But here's the good news, UConn fans: A loss to your old coach Randy Edsall and Maryland on Sept. 14 and you've got a real chance to move up to No. 1.

Amidon keeps up record pace (Boston Herald)

"He's our playmaker out in the flank, so we're trying to be as creative as we can to get him the ball," BC coach Steve Addazio said after a 24-14 win. "Whether it's bubbles or screens, we're doing the best we can to feature him and utilize him. It gets harder and harder every week now, but he's our guy that can get open, catch it and do something with it. He's a real player and he's experienced. We have to find ways to get our playmakers (the ball)."

Enjoy the holiday!
