Boston College Baseball Hosting ALS Awareness Day On May 4th

via bceagles.com

Boston College will host the second annual ALS Awarenes Game on May 4th when the Eagles baseball team hosts the Virginia Tech Hokies at Commander Shea Field. This will continue a tradition started last year in honor of former Eagle player and current director of baseball operations, Pete Frates, who is diagnosed with ALS, commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

ALS Bracelets will be sold for $1 before and during the game with all proceeds going to the ALS Association. Strikeout ALS clothing and memorabilia will be sold during the game to benefit the Pete Frates #3 Fund. The Frates Fund, set up to help defer medical care and expenses for the 2007 graduate of Boston College, will also host an auction before the game to raise money. Fans can purchase raffle tickets to win earmarked gifts and prizes.

Last season, Boston College hosted the first annual game in front of a record 2,286 fans at Shea Field. Fans lined the ramp adjacent to Alumni Stadium parking garage as Frates was presented with his Boston College jersey by field manager Mike Gambino and former athletic director Gene DeFillippo. The game was held in April during the series against Wake Forest, with the game resulting in a 6-1 victory over the Demon Deacons.

Frates was a member of the Eagles from 2004-2007, named captain of the team during his senior season. He had previously been the MVP on the baseball Beanpot in 2006. In response to his diagnosis, BC baseball rallied to start the Strikeout ALS Campaign, aimed at helping Pete through his disease and assist in the fight against ALS. In its continued fight, Frates spoke at the annual BC Baseball Night and net proceeds from this year’s baseball Beanpot will go to the Frates Fund. This year’s Beanpot championship and consolation games are scheduled for Monday, April 29th, at Fenway Park in Boston.
