"The Book" Week of November 2, 2013

Alabama back to #1, Eagles drop to #73 overall and #12 in ACC...5 point underdog vs Hokies this Saturday

A rather pedestrian week for the book this week, finishing 24-25-2 .491 against the spread with two games exactly the same as Vegas. Putting us at 212-186-8 .532 with 24 games the same for the season.

Recapping the season to date

  • August 31: 20 - 21 .488, 3 the same
  • September 7: 15-20 .429, 4 the same
  • September 14: 25-16-2 .605, 1 the same
  • September 21: 23-18-1 .560, 2 the same
  • September 28: 21-23-1 .478, 3 the same
  • October 5: 30-21-1 .587, 3 the same
  • October 12: 22-26-1 .459, 1 the same
  • October 19: 27-16 .628, 4 the same

Alabama's 45-10 win over Tennessee was enough to lift the Tide back into the one spot, overtaking FSU who fell to second in our top 20. Central Florida, Michigan State, Auburn, Texas and Oklahoma State all join this week, the Knights and Tigers for the first time this year, while Nebraska, Oregon State, Miami, Boise State and Texas Tech tumbled out.

The Miami thing is probably the most curious one of this season. There is always at least one team that is very highly ranked that the Book doesn't think too much of and this year it's the Canes, despite their undefeated record. Jeff Sagarin seems to agree, putting the U at 28 this week. The Book has Miami at 26. Conversely there are usually one or two teams much more highly rated than their human poll counterparts, this year those two are Arizona State and Wisconsin.

BC's discouraging loss at North Carolina dropped the Eagles down to #73 in the country overall and #12 in the ACC. They will be a 5 point underdog (maybe the score will be 5-0?) against Virginia Tech this Saturday at Alumni.

In case you were curious, the following big 5 (sorry AAC) conference teams who are worse than the Eagles currently are: Kentucky (#77), West Virginia (#78), North Carolina State (#79), Illinois (#80), Arkansas (#81), Iowa State (#87), Virginia (#88), Purdue (#100), California (#104), Colorado (#105), Kansas (#106)...so an improvement from a year ago where for most of the year, the Book put the Eagles last among all AQ conference teams.
