Frazier-Ali, Celtics-Lakers, Yankees-Dodgers, even last year LSU-Alabama...all of those in their own time were matches or matchups that were destined to happen..so it is with our Old Guy edition of the Ultimate BC Football Game. Notre Dame 1993 vs Miami 1984. Games which rank in the all time annals of college football. No need to stretch the truth or create hyperbole, these two games are among the greatest ever played and the little Catholic school from Chestnut Hill not only played in both of them...but won them.
So who wins this one? Is it the Hail Mary from Flutie to Phelan with no time on the clock ..a heave of some 64 yards into not only history but to the Heisman? Is it the back and forth of over 1200 yards of offense in a driving rain storm? Is it three lead changing TDs in the last 3:50 of the game? Why is that Hail Mary so much more special than for instance the Kordell Stewart bomb to beat Michigan in the Big House...I don't necessarily know...but it is!
Or is it the program's one and only win over #1? But it just wasn't beating #1. #1 was 10-0 Notre Dame in the last game of the season...in their house..after an ND win in what people were calling "The Game of the Century" just a week earlier against Florida State. It was winning after getting humiliated a year earlier in the same spot, 54-7. It was playing the greatest three quarters of football in BC history only to see a 21 point lead vanish and then somehow find a way in the final minute to persevere and win on a line drive knuckleball FG from a guy no one thought could make it..except David Gordon.
You choose! And if you can...tell me WHY!
