The Ultimate BC Football Game (Old Guy Edition) - 1970-99: Tom Coughlin Bracket Championship - #1 - Notre Dame - 1993 vs #9 - Notre Dame - 1994

[Ed. note -- Front Page'd]

The #2 seed 1984 Miami game, rolled over the #15 seed 1987 Tennessee game, 97% to 3% to reach the Jack Bicknell Bracket Final against #7 Penn State 1992. That brings the opening round of The Ultimate BC Game (Old Guy Edition) to conclusion. We start round two with the Tom Coughlin Bracket Championship between the 1993 win over #1 Notre Dame seeded number one and the only lower seed to win an opening round game, the 1994 win over Notre Dame seeded ninth.

The winner of this contest will advance to the tournament semifinal to face the Joe Yukica Bracket champion, either #4 - Texas - 1976 or #5 - Penn State - 1983.

Voting on this game will run through 11:55 PM on July 30.

You can check the overall bracket out below.

We looked at each of the coaches for whom the brackets are named, with the exception of Tom Coughlin, so let's take a look at the guy who I put the Head Coach on the 1970-2011 All Time BC Team list.

Tom Coughlin actually had two stints at BC. The first was as Jack Bicknell's quarterback coach from 1981-83, where he was fortunate enough to have as his star pupil, Doug Flutie. Coughlin was not around though for the historic 1984 Cotton Bowl season, as he took the first of three jobs at the NFL level, this one with the Philadelphia Eagles, all as wide receivers coach.

He spent two seasons in Philadelphia, followed by two in Green Bay and finally onto the staff of Bill Parcells and the NY Giants, where the staff included such notables as Bill Belichick, Romeo Crennel, Al Groh, Charlie Weis, Ron Earhardt and Ray Handley. 6 members of that staff would go on to become NFL head coaches, while another 2 (Groh and Weis) would become Division I college head coaches.

On January 27, 1991, the Giants captured the Super Bowl upsetting the Buffalo Bills 20-19 in Tampa. Prior to that though, Coughlin had already accepted the position as the Head Coach in Chestnut Hill and he started right away following the game, phoning recruits from the victorious locker room. The new era of BC football had begun.

The ultimate disciplinarian, stories of Coughlin workouts and practices became legendary and for the players, the games became the easy part.

His first team opened 0-4, including losing the first ever Big East Conference football game at Rutgers, followed by consecutive losses to #2 Michigan, #17 Georgia Tech and #10 Penn State, but by season's end, the lessons taught had clearly taken hold and on a cold November night, Coughlin's Eagles went toe to toe with the #1 ranked Miami Hurricanes and came within a whisker of the upset of the season, dropping a 19-14 decision. No BC team ever made more progress in one year and the blue print for future successes had been drawn.

In 1992, the Eagles would go bowling for the first time since 1986 and in 1993, would not only defeat #1, but come within one first down and a David Green fumble of beating top 5 teams (Notre Dame then West Virginia) in back to back games and earning a spot in the Sugar Bowl as the Big East champion.

He lasted just three years at the Heights, almost leaving after his second year to head back to the Giants as their head coach. Luckily for all concerned, he hung in one more season which culminated in the victory over #1 Notre Dame, before becoming the first head coach of the expansion Jacksonville Jaguars. He would lead the Jaguars for 8 years prior to being fired and after taking a year off, go back to the NY Giants in 2004, where he is on the brink of Hall of Fame status following two Super Bowl wins in the past five years, both against his former colleague Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots.
