Baseball Takes Series Over No. 14 Georgia Tech

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College baseball team split the doubleheader with No. 14 Georgia Tech on Saturday afternoon at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Shea Field. The Eagles (9-13, 2-7 ACC) won the first game, 4-3, in the bottom of the ninth, and fell, 2-1, to the Yellow Jackets (15-9, 4-5 ACC) in the second game. BC upset the ranked Ramblin' Wreck by winning two of the three-game series.

Senior Anthony Melchionda led the way for the Eagles, going 3-for-6 in the two games, while classmate Spenser Payne was 2-for-4. Four different Eagles tallied RBIs, including both seniors and freshman Blake Butera, who hit the game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded to give BC the win in the first game.

The Jackets were 8-0 when scoring first before coming to The Heights, but the Eagles won two of the three meetings, even after allowing GT to get on the board first.

In game one, senior LHP Nate Bayuk (1-1) tallied his first win of the season, pitching 1.1 innings. He did not allow a hit, run or walk and struck out two keep the Jackets at bay. Junior right-handed starter Hunter Gordon pitched 7.2 innings, allowed seven hits, three runs, two walks and struck out five.

With Georgia Tech up 3-2 in the ninth, Jake Davies (0-1) tallied the loss after loading the bases on a walk, error and hit by pitch. Reliever Alex Cruz gave up a grounder to freshman Tyler Hinchliffe to score the tying run and then Butera hit the walk-off single for the BC win. Starter RHP Luke Bard went seven innings, allowed six hits, two runs and struck out six.

In game two, junior righty Taylor Lasko (0-2) took the loss, pitching the first four innings and issuing four hits, two runs, one walk and getting two strikeouts. The Eagle pitching staff of freshman lefty Nick Poore, senior righty Kyle Prohovich and sophomore righty Matt Alvarez did not give up a run and only allowed two more hits on the day, walking three and striking out two.

GT right-hander Dusty Isaacs (4-1) recorded the win, going five innings, allowing three hits, one run, six walks and three Ks. Reliever Cole Pitts tallied his first save of the season, allowing four hits and one strikeout.

In the first game, the Jackets tallied two in the first on a single by Sam Dove, scoring Brandon Thomas, who had singled and moved to third on a stolen base and throwing error by junior catcher Matt Paré, and a sac fly by Daniel Palka.

The Eagles tied the game by the third, plating one in the second and one in the third. Payne hit a sac fly to tally the first run, scoring senior Andrew Lawrence who led off the second with a double, and Melchionda drove in sophomore Tom Bourdon, who had doubled down the right line, on a single to left but was thrown out at second trying stretch it into a double.

GT retook the lead in the fourth, scoring one on a single by Mott Hyde, scoring pinch hitter Daniel Spingola, who had doubled to right.

The Eagles came through in the end with ninth-inning heroics to clinch the series.

In the second game, GT only needed the two runs it scored in the first. Evan Martin hit the first pitch of the game to left for a double and scored on a 4-6-3 double play. Thomas, who drew a walk and advanced to third on the double play, tallied the second run on when Palka singled through the left side.

BC cut the lead in half in the fourth on an RBI single by sophomore John Hennssey, scoring junior Rob Moir, who singled to center. The Eagles threatened in the fifth, loading the bases on a walk and two hit by pitches with two outs, but Isaacs forced a groundout to end the inning before the Maroon and Gold could tie the game.

The Eagles return to play on Tuesday, March 27 at Northeastern at 3 p.m.
