Boston College Basketball: Should Deirunas Visockas Play More?
[Ed. note -- Front Page'd]
Although he didn't score -- as did none of BC's bench -- in last night's stunning BC win over #17 Florida State, 64-60, Deirunas Visockas played a huge role in the upset. He played good defense, had 3 assists and never looked overwhelmed by the moment when he came in with FSU up 23-10.
Before this game, Visockas had played a grand total of one minute the entire season, and when Visockas came in with BC already in a bad stretch, I thought the Don was giving up. I was so wrong. With Visockas in the game, BC went on a 23-3 run, and ended up leading by 1 at the half.
To open the second half, BC fell behind by 2 with Visockas out. When he came back in, BC stretched their lead to 8, and they never relinquished that lead. The rest of the team seemed calm with Viscokas in the game, and a little tentative without him.
I think Visockas will play about eight minutes at Virginia Tech on Sunday. That game is winnable, and if the team plays better with him in, go ahead, put him in. Also, a shout-out to John Cain Carney, who also held his own on the defensive end inside.

I’d love to see Deirunas play more, but like the situation of John Cahill, he is one and out. I believe that Deirunas is a graduate student, so we won’t be seeing him next year. Coach Donahue is definitely looking ahead to next year, so although he may see a little more playing time, you won’t see him getting too many more minutes.
pardon my confusion...
but how do the NCAA eligibility rules work? If you haven’t previously been enrolled in an NCAA institution, or any college/university in the US, don’t you have 4 yrs of eligibility? Why would Visockas only have 1 year as a grad student? Maybe he did play somewhere else – in which case that’d answer my question – but why am I thinking he just came from Lithuania?
As far as the original question, yes, I think he and Cain Carney should play more from what I saw Wednesday. While there are no obvious stats to point to, I thought both were not out of place and contributed signif minutes to keeping the top 7-8 guys fresh. Plus they both add some size to their respective positions which is always nice w/ matchups and rebounding (one of our achilles heels).
Visockas played two years at Lafayette College before knee injuries sidelined him.

Cain Carney is a freshman, recruited walk-on.
