Boston College Football To Host Miami In 2012 Opener

Photo

Looks like we had this one right. According to a report in today's Globe, Boston College will open the 2012 season hosting the Miami Hurricanes on Labor Day weekend.

"Boston College will open its 2012 football season at home against Miami on Labor Day weekend, according to sources at Boston College.

The likely dates are Sunday or Monday, although the entire weekend remains in play.

The Eagles will likely play at home against Maine the next weekend."

As I've written before, if there's one ACC team you want to open the season against, it's Georgia Tech (lucky Virginia Tech).

But if there's a second ACC team you want to host in the opener this coming season, it's Miami. Boston College is set to return 19 starters -- 9 offense, 9 defense, 1 specialist -- while Miami returns just 12. The Hurricanes are projected to lose seven starters on offense and five on defense from a team that finished 6-6 last season.

BC defeated Miami 24-17 in the season finale for both teams. Both finished a disappointing 3-5 in the ACC last season.

SUNDAY NIGHT NATIONAL TV and a Packed House!!!

Sweet!

Miami
Maine

and then we have a few scheduled, but when is the entire sked finalized?

Should drop soon, though I suspect we might be in a holding pattern waiting on WVU and the Big East to settle.

We have struggled with our attendance on Labor Day Weekend the past few years….

Do you all think playing on Sunday or Monday will help?

by hoyaeagle on Feb 9, 2012 9:42 AM EST reply actions

Though Miami is an upgrade over the past few years openers — Northwestern, Weber State, Northeastern, Kent State, Wake Forest.

by Brian Favat on Feb 9, 2012 10:03 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Completely agree that Miami is a significant upgrade over the other programs you mentioned.

I just hope we play it on Monday because I think Sunday would be a tough sell to fans…

Saturday people can still travel after the game and enjoy the long weekend. Monday, people could go to the game as they all are traveling back anyways. Sunday… Smack dab in the middle and think we’d have a very poor showing.

by hoyaeagle on Feb 9, 2012 10:19 AM EST up reply actions

But when does the NFL season start? If it doesn’t start until the first Thursday after Labor Day, BC-Miami could have Sunday all to themselves. 3:30p start.

by Brian Favat on Feb 9, 2012 10:24 AM EST up reply actions

TV wise it makes a ton of sense to be on Sunday. I’m just thinking actual attendance.

by hoyaeagle on Feb 9, 2012 10:35 AM EST up reply actions

It's Miami

Regardless of the whole Shapiro / NCAA investigation thing, the fact that Spaz is back, etc. etc., this will likely be the best attended home opener in a long time.

by Brian Favat on Feb 9, 2012 10:51 AM EST up reply actions

2011: Northwestern — 37,561
2010: Weber State — 34,168
2009: Northeastern — 33,262
2008: Georgia Tech — 40,106
2007: Wake Forest — 42,292
2006: Clemson — 44,500

Last six home Miami games: 44,500 (2007), 44,500 (2003), 44,500 (2001), 44,084 (1999), 40,006 (1997), 44,500 (1995)

I know this isn’t your older brother’s Miami team but BC will be able to come close to a sellout for this one. Saturday, Sunday or Monday … doesn’t matter.

by Brian Favat on Feb 9, 2012 10:55 AM EST up reply actions

Don’t get me wrong. I love opening with the Hurricanes. Just think Monday would be easier for fans (and easier to convince others to go to as opposed to a weekend on the Cape, etc.)

Fair points on our Miami home attendance but question the 2007 Miami game. Was there and that stadium was not at capacity.

by hoyaeagle on Feb 9, 2012 10:59 AM EST up reply actions

no way

BC will be able to come close to a sellout for this one

Classes being on the Tuesday after Labor Day, so there will be a good student crowd. But for non-students, i can’t see this as a sell out type draw

Some would say this is a rather pessimistic outlook on next season’s home opening attendance total.

by Brian Favat on Feb 9, 2012 11:44 AM EST up reply actions

hmmm... . is thought control still at play by BFav?

Am I allowed to disagree with you anymore? or will you delete my posts when I’ve said something you do not like?

When you write false things about me personally, that get attached to my real name on the Internet, they get deleted. This doesn’t just apply to comments / attacks of me, but everyone on this site.

by Brian Favat on Feb 9, 2012 12:11 PM EST up reply actions

well now, this deserves a serious reply, but not on the blog

why don’t we not have this discussion in public and you can just delete this mini-thread.

(I am sure you do not want a public response to what you just falsely said about me)

Or … as you asked 74, we can leave all the insults and personal BS out of the comments section altogether and stick to talking about BC sports.

No

No, there’s no difference. There is a zero tolerance policy for name-calling or personal insults. All are promptly deleted. There is literally no value in putting a comment on every post that does nothing more than take shots at AJB for being negative, for example, or taking shots at other readers.

Others have been banned from this site for far less.

This is a great site due to all the contributions of our readers. Any personal insults or other comments directed at a author / reader makes others feel less welcomed and are promptly deleted.

“Yes, I think you ideas are wrong and your perspective horrid, but I do not know you and you do not know me. There is big difference between me not liking your ideas and me hurling personal rude insults your way.

Argument is good. Insults and personal bs are not."

Ugly post

First, when did I engage in name calling? It never happened. So do not dare suggest that I engaged in name calling.

Had you not acted like a petty third world dictator and deleted (censored) my comment about you, it would be obvious to all that there was no name calling or personal insults.

Now let’s talk about character. I told you twice that I meant no harm with my now-deleted post that got you all hinky. I apologized. Twice. Did you ever acknowledge my apology or accept it. Of course not. Is that part of the welcoming approach to BCI. No it is not.

You can make jokes about my optimistic view point all the time, but if I point out your negative POV, or, God forbid, characterize AJ’s statement that he is a “pessimist” as true, you guys go nuts. How dare I say anything about your POV or even speak of AJ.

So now you are pulling out the “banned” card. Really. Is this a threat? Sounds like it. Why elese would it be mentioned? I do not care for bullying tactics. Censor first. Ban second How unenlightened and unAmerican . And really how totally obnoxious

BCI is, sometimes, a great BC blog. But the overall negative, fatalistic point of view is really a total drag to read over and over again. Now you add to that doom-and-gloom POV this present threat to ban and censor, and the chilling effect such open and hostile threats have on open discourse, and it tells me that things really are headed down hill here. What a shame.

Turn it around. You can.

EO — recently, your comments have added absolutely nothing to this site. You constantly take shots at hoya, AJ and myself, among others, and make readers and commenters feel less welcome.

Have you ever stopped and thought about why waterwater was banned over at the the Notre Dame blog, Florida State blog, Connecticut blog or Clemson blog?

Keep comments related to BC sports or leave. It’s very simple.

Hoya - Changed my mind..Make it Monday!

You are right…….Make it Monday Night 09-03 so the return to Boston from the Cape and start the game at 8PM?

I know Bama and Michigan are in Jerry World Arlington on 09-01, so no Saturday night conflict!

This is not some schlock team this is the freaking U with over 30 hot incoming freshman and former BC man Al Golden!

BC should get 43+ on Monday!

Short turnaround for the Maine game then. Black Bears gave Pitt a scare last year.

by Brian Favat on Feb 9, 2012 10:00 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

The ACC will do its best not to conflict with a game like Bama - Michigan

The Miami – BC game will most likely be on Sunday, as there are no pro games then, similar to how Maryland-Navy was on the first sunday two years ago. GT-VT will be the Monday night game, as it will garner a larger national audience. I’m interested in why the ACC is having two conference games to start the season, one in which has been a major Thursday night draw since the league expanded. You’ll have Clemson vs Auburn & NC State vs Tennessee both in Atlanta, then these two? Isn’t that taking away from the rest of the season? Not a smart move in my opinion.

by AParker on Feb 9, 2012 10:17 AM EST up reply actions

The ACC has it backwards

Allows programs to schedule non-conference dates first, and then bolts on the conference schedule around those non-conference dates. That’s why the conference typically has 1-2 league games to start the season due to the different in non-conference scheduling philosophy.

E.g. Florida State, Clemson, Georgia Tech and recently Wake Forest (Vanderbilt) and Miami (USF) all want to end the year playing a non-conference opponent. BC, Pitt and more recently Wake, Maryland and Miami all get Notre Dame somewhere in the middle of the year between the Irish’s Big Ten games at the beginning of the year (Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue) and Pac-12 games (Stanford, USC) at the end.

In my opinion, the league would be better served not having any ACC games on the opening weekend, but not all programs end up scheduling non-conference games to start the season due to limitations on their non-conference opponents calendars (Notre Dame, SEC teams).

Unfortunately, if the ACC did move to a scheduling model where there were no conference games on Labor Day, the first weekend would be more or less unwatchable, since most ACC programs would just open with a I-AA punching bag. Other than a marquee non-conference matchup here or there, the first three weeks of the Big Ten schedule have been awful … and generally follow the pattern of I-AA, MAC, BCS, MAC.

Crowds aside, this is a bad way to start 2012

We all know too well that Spaz is terrible at getting the team in peak form to open the season. Recall last year. Guys were not in shape and the players were not playing as a team by any means in the early weeks (e.g., OL).

Playing Miami on opening day sounds bad. I do like playing Maine on week 2. I’d have preferred the week 1 oppoenent to be a MAC-like team.

But, we do have a advantage in returning starters, so maybe BC can sneak a win here.

Double Eagle

Saw the set up coming. Sounds like the voice of experience. I guess eight losses in one year will do that.
