National Signing Day 2012: Boston College Football Recruiting Overview / Open Thread
It's Christmas in February! National Signing Day. Keep it here throughout the day for news on Boston College football's Class of 2012. Below is a primer for the day's activities. Use this as an open thread to discuss the class, breaking BC recruiting news or whatever else is on your mind.
Also be sure to follow BCI on Twitter.
The BC Interruption crew will do its best to give you blow-by-blow coverage of the day's proceedings in an attempt to cover NSD from wall-to-wall, you know, between our real jobs and other responsibilities. We'll have commitment profiles throughout the day, this here open thread and a recap at the end of the day.
Now, unlike other schools whose fans end up glued to a webcam of a fax machine, Boston College football keeps it casual on National Signing Day. There are really only a couple of events to keep your eyes out for during the day.
1. Chandler, Az. DT Jaxon Hood will announce his decision on Fox Sports Arizona's webcast at approx. 10:20 AM Pacific / 1:20 PM Eastern. Hood verbally committed to the Eagles back in December, but has since re-opened his commitment and is deciding between BC, Arizona and Arizona State. As one of the few recruits on the defensive line, Jaxon is an important recruit for the Eagles class. The timing, however, is sort of awkward ... considering ...
2. Boston College coach Frank Spaziani will hold the program's National Signing Day press conference starting at 1 PM Eastern from the Yawkey Center. I'm assuming the school will make it a thing -- maybe? -- and have a streaming webcast of the press conference. If there is one, we'll throw up the link to the feed. There, Spaz will announce the signing of the Class of 2012.
Some things we are keeping an eye on.
1. Will Hood commit? I have no idea, but if I had to guess, my guess is Superfans will end up disappointed in Hood's choice of college. While I have zero inside knowledge of the situation, and could end up being horribly, horribly wrong on this one, if I had to pick, I'd say Hood will end up at Arizona State. His older brother, Tevan, recently announced he's transferring from San Diego to Arizona.
2. Who else? Anyone else? Will Spaz and the coaching staff end up securing any more last minute commitments for the Class of 2012? Right now the Eagles have 15 solid verbals and a soft verbal from Hood. If Spaz and GDF are on the same page, I'd hope BC ends up with 2-3 more recruits to round out the class.
3. Where will BC's class rank in the ACC? Programs love to puff our their chests when the final results are in and the incoming class is deemed the best in the nation. At the opposite end of the spectrum, I'm interested in seeing where BC's class ranks among the rest of the conference. Right now, the trend is not positive. BC currently has the 11th best class in the conference according to Rivals and Scout. Dead last according to ESPN. And 247 Sports already factors in Syracuse and Pitt for whatever reason, and there, BC ranks 13th of 14th. Looks like the Eagles competition for this year's conference recruiting basement is Duke, Wake Forest or Georgia Tech, depending on who you ask. The good news is that if BC's class ranks last this year, that means BC gets the number 1 overall draft pick the following year, right? No.
Here's a look at this year's Boston College recruiting class as of Tuesday night, ranked in order by commitment date. Leave your thoughts on the class below.

Sounds like Jaxon Hood is gone. Both Rivals and Scout have him off BC’s board.

Hood and Skubal is a wash. Hood didn’t want to be here and Skubal can be coached up!

We signed a long snapper! Spaz has not forgotten about the punting game, EO.

Lenny the Long Snapper
Seems to be an excellent long snapper. Good to have this key spot covered.
Also an LB, but small at 5’11" and 200 lbs. 4.9 40 is slow too.
Here he is:

I’m still upset with how our athletic departments use social media.
I’m looking at all these other bigtime programs and they are immediately tweeting every letter that comes through the fax machines…Why can’t BC do this? Why can’t they have a handle dedicated to football? Why are we always 5 years behind everyone else…
An opportunity for us where the school falls short.
Here is the BC football-specific Twitter handle FYI, @BCFootballNews. No Tweets yet today.

Thanks. Didn’t find that handle.
Really wish someone actually embraced it and made it a bigger priority. It’s a such a valuable tool. Know you guys wrote something on this but just looking at twitter this morning, everyone is talking about Signing Day. The only way I can find the actual LOI faxed so far are going to be here and EA.
GDF still thinks Mark Blaudschun’s daily column/propaganda piece is considered social media.

I don’t give a crap what GDF does in terms of dispersing information I would never use him as a primary source anyways. I just feel bad for the casual fan who is trying to get information about the team.

I look at it more as a recruiting tool and a way for the university to get more exposure.
It’s not the end all be all for most of these recruits, but considering the fact that there are workarounds for contacting a recruit through FB and Twitter, I think we’re falling behind.
Coaches can’t write on a recruit’s Facebook wall or instant message him, but are free to send private messages during contact periods. On Twitter, coaches can’t publicly mention recruits, but they are allowed to send direct messages.
Recruiting is the LIFE BLOOD for College Football
and how you do 2 and 3 years down the road on the field and the culmination of 2-3 years of recruiting work, calls, shoe leather and sweat.
Recruiting is a rolling talent forecasting model, like Finance!
BC’s class and present talent is not even close to a glass half full.
These continuing BC classes of ZERO 4 and 5 star players have set back BC Football and the next few years, will be very challenging.
This is a disgrace.
Look hard at who we play and the peer scademic schools on the ESPN and all lists.
Bring a barf bag.
I would pay a consulting fee to sit and watch BF, AJ and someone finally stand up to those two greaseballs in the 1PM conference and say..
“Yadda-yadda 2 year extension and the last 4 years, BC yadda-yadda…or the best collection of all our comments… and if the extension was for recruiting,
YOU MOOKS HAVE FAILED! …and why is our recruiting head still here…etc.etc.
BC insulates Yawkey with pathetic House lackies and stooges like Bluntshammed and no matter what the record next year…. GDF and Spazoo slide right through the cheap jesuit looking glass like 2011!
BC Football Class is a D.
Low quality.
Low quantity.
No high rated speed in the skilled positions
Welcome to 1964. We are a slow, plodding team and we better cut each game in half and hope to win.
Reminder: Veals On Wheels Van will be at Yawkey at Noon!

Go look at ESPN while you work.
Like Bill Romanoski said after Denver upset Greeb Bay about Brett Favre and the heralded Packer offense.
“All week, that is all we heard and it makes me wanna puke!”
We could use the intensity of Romo at BC as head Coach and recruiter.
I am even sick of my own redundant posts!
I got nothing left but the NFL draft.
2-FSU
7-Clemson
9-Notre Dame
16-California —peer academic shcool
17-Stanford —PAS
24-TCU —PAS
25-Vanderbilt —PAS (that really kills me)
26-30 Virginia Tech
26-30 Baylor (PAS and former doormat)
26-30 Pittsburgh
5-12 future and current opponents.
We are still located in Boston, right?
Clemson and FSU always recruit well -- it is old hat
Despite the huge recruiting advantage of these two school, BC enjoys a solid ACC W-L record against both schools.
No need to freak out that FSU and Clemson are continuing to pull in big fish.
However, if grooving on negativity is your thing, don’t let me stop the “We REALLY Suck” party
Here you go kids!

I have no expectation that BC will be back in the ACC Championship Game any time soon. I just say a little prayer every night that Syracuse and Pitt can get here sooner rather than later so BC football can look good in comparison.

no surprises
I’m no insider or expert, but from I’ve been reading, there will be no real surprises. Yup, will probably lose Hood too, but whether he’s in or out isn’t really going to change the ratings and perception of this class. Bottom line: it’s a down year. But disasterous? No.
First, most of our focus has been on who we’ve lost in the last couple weeks, the primary loss being Lynch. That said, even Lynch was not likely to play or contribute much right away with what’s in front of him. The biggest disappointments I’d say is lack of WRs and CBs/DBs, the latter being the bigger need. Again though, true frosh rarely contribute, especially in 30-50 classes like BC normally is. It is not unexpected that with us trending downward for 3 yrs, 2011 being our worst, that we’d have trouble in this year’s recruiting class. As our record improves, this year and next, you’ll see our recruiting improve as well. It’s only when you string 2-3 bad classes in a row that you’re going to see a big impact.
While we always want to see more and better skill players at BC, RB and WR are not huge areas of immediate need – DBs though are. The best news in this class is that we got a few well-regarded linemen. Football is won and lost at the LOS.
Remember, but for a Toal here or a Blackmon there, NSD has never been a hugely successful or optimistic day for BC. Our stars are rarely stars in the eyes of the nation on signing day.
7-5 in 2012 and 9-3 in 2013 will cure what ails us.
Any way the team does well next season and Spaz still gets fired?
GDF says something stupid one too many times, the administration has it with him embarrassing the university, he’s fired, the new AD sees Spaz for what he is, incompetent in spite of next year’s hopefully relative success, he’s fired, new AD goes and gets Tom Coughlin who retired from the NFL after his third title and wants to come back to the college game for the chance to shape young men’s lives and finish what he started..a fantasy, I know.
But possible other than the TC stuff..and the Board actually getting rid of GDF thing. So yeah, it won’t happen.
Depressing.

BC pick up any surprises today?
Any late movement from Rutgers guys? Two guys were wating past today to sign right?
by cwm2005 on Feb 1, 2012 4:33 PM EST via iPhone app reply actions
LB Steve Longa said he was gonna check out Maryland this weekend after visiting BC, but he re-committed to Rutgers today. Julian Pinnix-Odrick also wavered but signed with Rutgers.
I think the only damage to Rutgers recruiting class was Giacone to BC and Devin Fuller to UCLA. So … yay us?
Editor, BC Interruption
No alarms and no surprises
No surprises for BC.
Scout.com has BC picking up a long snapper Leonard Skubal (he wasn’t ranked earlier in the day but now has 2*), but he isn’t part of the announced class. Not sure what the deal is … he might just be a recruited walk-on.
Spaz also mentioned in the press conference not to expect any late additions to the class.

Disappointed in the final count
We still have a bunch of scholarships available and are currently rocking sanction-level # of scholarships. Gene promised 18-19 and we ended up with 16 — really 14, considering Marcus Grant transferred and Steven Daniels was also in last year’s class.
Happy for the guys we signed but disappointed we couldn’t bring in more players. Banking scholarships like this is not a winning formula.
