ACC Announces Baseball Scheduling Changes

The ACC Baseball Championship will feature 10 teams in a six-day event.

Starting in 2014, the ACC Baseball Championship will feature 10 teams in a six-day event. A double-elimination format will be used Tuesday through Friday followed by two single-elimination games on Saturday and the Championship Game on Sunday.

This is a big change from the current Championship format, where eight programs are divided into two pools of four teams, play three games in pool play with the winners of each pool meeting in the Championship Game.

No word on what will happen to the ACC's divisions in baseball, though it makes sense that Notre Dame will join Boston College in the Atlantic with Pittsburgh joining the Coastal Division. Syracuse doesn't field a varsity men's baseball program.

The decision to not qualify all programs is an interesting one and runs counter to the conference's decision to include every program in ACC Tournaments. Guess the value just isn't there in flying the league's two worst programs to North Carolina for an Olympic Sports conference tournament championship.
