Post game thoughts from a Maryland Perspective

I am copying and pasting this from a post I made on a Maryland board....

First--that was a disappointing loss.

Second--I am not upset with this team, though I really wish we could have made a play at the end of that.

My overall assessment is the team played okay. Definitely not a great performance, but not a bad one either. BC played one of their better games in my opinion. Rowe struggled but hes a true freshman in his first start and we trailed almost the entire game and didn't have a strong run game to support him. Given those facts, he could have played a lot worse.

Offense: With Dorsey out in the second half (along with Boykins and Leak) our top 3 WRs were true freshman Stefon Diggs, RS Freshman Nigel Leak, and RS freshman Tyrek Cheeseboro. Throw in a true freshman QB (Caleb Rowe) and a true freshman RB (Wes Brown) and all five of our skill possession guys are freshman! No wonder at times they were no impressive. In addition we had two freshman starting on the O-Line in true freshman Mike Madaras and RS Freshman Andrew Zeller. That means in the second half we had 7 freshman on offense. The offense wasn't that great, but that is to be expected. However, not being able to generate more on the ground was disappointing.

Defense: Played a great 55 minutes, but had a bad first two minutes and final three minutes. Other than blowing the coverage on that TD at teh end of the game, I think BC should made some plays on their winning TD drive, we brought five guys a few times on that series and actually got pressure but was just a millisecond from a sack. It happens but it was disappointing it happened in the clutch.

Special Teams: Craddock missed a crucial 35 yard fg. He is freaking awful inside of 40 yards for FG. His redeeming value is that he can make up from distance, but hes absolutely killing us missing these fg's that are less than 40 yards. I would invite Ferrera back next year and have him kick inside 40 and Craddock outside 40. Ferrera was not a great kicker, but he was a much better kicker than Craddock on the shorter fgs. Renfro is inconsistent but has his moments. It looked like he out kicked the coverage. Not sure if that is on the coverage team or Renfro for not getting enough hangtime. As crazy as it sounds, it can be counter productive to hit a punt 50 yards if you have lousy hangtime because you are setting up the other team for a big return. That said, it may have been okay hangtime and just bad coverage, I am not sure (and realistically it could have been a combo of both). Diggs took out took Kickoffs and got tackled at the 15 both times, that is surprising.

Overall this team played exactly like the team I thought they were. Boston College managed to shoot themselves in the foot one less time than I anticipated and that was why I was wrong in my prediction. I am now 6-2 in predicting Terp games on the season with Temple and Boston College being my two misses.
