BC's New Spread Offense is Most Likely.....Fatally Flawed
When you switch to your 4th Offensive Coordinator in basically 1 year.... from Topoo Tranquill, KR, Brock and now to Doug Martin..... and to a sophisticated, completely out of BC character offensive system or BC program level offensive comfort zone.... you have to have the required talent to learn, execute and perform in the new complex system... AND with no 3 weeks of bowl game practices and a very limited spring and fall window for crisp and effective implementation.
BC was the most vanilla, slow, predictaable, plodding clydesdale type of offensive line blocking straight ahead mentality stuck in a 1964 antiquated offense with very little variations of formations...... since Matty Ryan graduated in 2007. Even in 2007, BC did not have many sequences where Ryan was calling the plays in a hurry-up shotgun at the line of scrimmage in a 5 receiver set!!

Part II -- BC's Spread Offense is Destined for Failure and Doomed.
I have had the good fortune of watching Baylor, Houston and Texas Tech and their highlight programs with their Head Coaches. Lots of games and lots of plays over many years.
Art Briles, Kevin Sumlin, Mike Leach were all high powered offensive guru’s and QB coaches…… and at a high impact BCS level!
Case Keenum, RG3 the Heisman Boy, and all the Red Raider QB’s were well schooled and were also trained in high school and worked all summer honing their skills and were hair triggered, quick release, agile spread offensive QB’s.
Most of them went to the NFL and the first two above will also go.
Doug Martin was a mediocre Offensive Coordinator at non-BCS conference bantamweight schools and his record was poor. His talent level was not BCS level. His track record at those schools was simply not impressive - even at that low level of competition.
Gene DeFilippo and Frank Spaziani are lemmings are destined to fail miserably.
Here is why:
The spread offense is the new NCAA offense of choice but you have to recruit the talent many seasons in advance and have that system in place with the right QB and a deep offensive talent base on offense that may have had that same system in high school or were 4 or 5 star recruits whose talent could be molded quickly.
Or, you have a super conducting super collider Head Coach with a magnetic persona who quickly can bring in a boatload of talent with 4 and 5 star speed and skilled position players and other players who fit the offensive spread offense mold.
Does that sound like our catatonic sideline statue Spazoo and his cushion defense which is the worst defense for the new spread offenses?
Here we go kids….
Let’s all peek into the 4th year of the Spazoo recruiting cupboard commits and present players and see how the new OC Doug Martin is going to re-tool the new BC spread offense:
1—Quarterback—
Chase Rettig is not the most agile quick footed pocket QB and you need to slide and pop that ball out quickly.
Chase has a strong arm, but you need to develop a quick release and practice the spread timing like a swiss watch.
This is very tough for any QB.
Case Keenum threw for 227 versus BCS Penn State in less than one quarter. Chase Rettig averaged 163 yards a game.
Lot of development and training work in the spring and fall and there are other QB’s recruited that want reps and a look?
2—Offensive Line
BC’s offensive line if you read the gameday threads was being overpowered at times and due to our past offensive styles, how well versed are our offensive linemen at quick pop blocking and cutting and back peddling to protect Chase for him throwing 45-60 chucks a game.
This line was mauled and blown over in the 4th quarter this year and ran out of steam and stamina -- if you check the stats -—and now they have to go from earthmoving, slow, run blockers - to quick, agile pass blocking technique experts with our offensive line coach who knows nothing about spread offensive blocking schemes and training and worse…and some OL’s were out of shape and fans noticed!!
Not too many offensive linemen at BC that played in high powered big boy High School spread offenses like Texas.
Part III is next, so don’t change that dial.
Part III -- Catch Me If You Can!
3—Running Backs.
Finch 11, Kimble 8 and Andre “Manos de Piedre” Williams had 2 receptions. Not impressive even if you were a fullback from the WING-T offensives of the 1930’s.
Can these guys chip block and scamper out and as a group catch 80—120+ passes or more a season?
Houston, we have a problem at BC!
Yeah…. like we need your Houston Cougar type of RB’s with pass catching skills!!
Any speed merchants with hands coming to BC this fall?
Nope.
4—Wide Receivers
I saved the worst achilles heel for the new BC spread offense for last since, like I posted, the worst is yet to come for BC Football in 2012.
Our WR’s —
Spiffy Evans was listed as a WR on one of the last BC depth charts. That was nice.
Spiffy Evans had 0 receptions.
Larmond 34/ Amidon 20/ and Swigert 44.
7 Touchdowns!
Our WR’s get smothered with good tough cornerbacks and run lousy routes. How can you expect these 3 and others to catch 375-400 passes with new drag and quick sharp route running and expert timing?
Did I miss any 4 or 5 star recruits on the latest Spazoo commit list?
You need a boatload of skilled speed players and a high level of execution from top to bottom to run an effective spread offense and the right recruits and coaches from top to bottom.
My next post will be the just like last year’s post of the Spazoo Excuse Train that hit the SB before I found this superb site.
I just can’t see this fast paced, high octane, high energy offense clicking on all cyclinders when you need a Ferrari 12 piston engine and your offense for 3 years was a 4 cyclinder Yugo?
The worst is yet to come.
Very Sad Post
Forgive me for saying that I hope you’re wrong on all counts. I agree that BC probably is not set up for this type of offense. Maybe they can adapt? Wasnt Martin still able to use the spread and produce an offense that scored a lot of yardage each game? And I don’t think they had 4 and 5 star recruits. In fact, they only have commitments this year from two recruits that are talented enough to warrant stars. Lets give the guy a chance and hope that he’s a future offensive genius. And that all he needed to do was come to BC for it to bloom…If you’re right (God forbid), and we do go down in flames next year, at least we can count on having a new coach. The saddest part is that BC just cannot afford another bad year with our recruiting efforts. Look at Syracuse, they are still not back. If BC has another bad year, I think we will have truly settled in the doldrums.
Martin’s NMSU offenses produced a lot of yards, but that was against a WAC schedule where the Aggies still managed to go just 4-9. Granted, that’s good for New Mexico State, but probably won’t cut it in the ACC.
I just hope Spaz realizes he needs to step away from the offense completely and stops tinkering.

As for the recruiting efforts, this year is shaping up to be pretty bad by all accounts. Add to this the confusion in switching to yet another offensive style of play and you have the potential for disaster.

Miracles Do Happen? Spazoo is Still a BCS Head Coach?
Gene DeFilippo waited years to fire Tom O’Brien and his loser, turtle up approach and was never called out for it. Then lemon faced TOB bad mouths BC for years later.
Then GDF’s juvenile impatience and temper——- ergo, the GDF monumental disaster level blunder ultimatum with firing Jags.
The 3rd miracle where Angels fear to tread, Jesuits kneel in awe and BC fans fear to speak of -- which was the 2 year extension of the incompetent Spazoo’s contract where we have 4 more years or hopefully a 3 year buyout/retirement/reassignment after 2012.
The Kevin Rogers fiasco, the present staff turmoil and lack of talent, recruiting at a long 4 year stretch of Colonial Conference speed and talent, - THE BIGGEST BC FOOTBALL PROBLEM TODAY = Recruiting is a DISASTER!!!!! -- and the tailgating, attendance no-shows, seating charges, donations, Flynn Fund going south…..
We all hope BC comes out roaring like the Houston Cougars next year and pigskins are flying into the endzone for touchdowns.
My heart is with alma mater.
My brain and analytical mind tells me, BC is trying to run a new Windows 7 on a 1986 Commander 286 PC and that software just won’t run, er….I mean pass!
I see a deep malaise and a more grim visage. I do not think BC can win a road game and the 7 home games, BC will be fighting for 3 home wins, except for Maine.
The new spread offenses needs talent and SPEED at the skilled positions and sharp execution and the right QB, and they all have to be orchestrated and coordinated in one beautiful smooth operation.
You also need a defense that takes calculated risks, blitzes and has an assertive mind set and doesn’t sit back in a catatonic calzone cushion soft man to man and zone.
Good Luck!
Statistics That Drive Success in the Colonial

On the bright side, moving to the spread will hopefully put Rettig in the shotgun more and ask him to get rid of the ball sooner. The O Line gave him little protection this year and he has a faulty internal clock = BC gave up 24 sacks this year.
Hopefully with the spread, we can cut down on the sacks and Rettig can get rid of the ball quicker.
